Dean's Update: September Memories
I suspect that many of us associate September with the new academic school year. What are your memories of and expectations for the experiences that come with this annual milestone? My own most vivid recollections include opening a box of new, sharp-tipped crayons in grade school and wrapping the covers of school-issued textbooks with flattened paper shopping bags in high school. Having these fresh school supplies at the start of the year somehow gave a special energy to all the reading and writing that I knew was to come. However, with newness also comes uncertainty. In college I most remember associating the start of the school year with being in classrooms full of strangers. It was always uncomfortable at first, finding ways to engage with different people of diverse backgrounds and talents. But as the school year went on and we learned together, these strangers became friends. Initial discomfort of the unknown prefaces learning and growth.

Shifting Collections: Oversize Books
When the fall term begins, the second level of W. W. Hagerty Library will look a little different to library users. An expanded collection of oversize items will be put into place at the front of the existing stacks. This will provide greater visibility for oversize books and make it easier to navigate the aisles between stacks.

New PALCI Reciprocal Borrowing Program
The Libraries is working with regional partners to provide our faculty, students and staff with on-site access and borrowing privileges at a number of local institutions - extending direct user access to hundreds of thousands of print resources at very little cost. Early commitments show that at least 13 other libraries will extend privileges to Drexel University's faculty, students and staff.

Q&A: Shin Amano, Access Services
When library seating fills up and students double-down to study, filled with the best intentions for the new school year, Shin Amano sees it all. As the Libraries' Access Services Specialist, Shin comes in close contact with clients, answering their questions and helping them find what they need. Since Shin sees so much of the day-to-day library activity, he was able to shed some light on how students use the library and how library staff keep up with them at such a busy time of year.
