AFC Annual Salute to the U.S. Armed Forces

We look forward to seeing you at the Chamber's Armed Forces Committee Annual Salute to the U.S. Armed Forces on Thursday, October 26, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Garden, Hotel Nikko Guam! Our very own Chamber members sponsor men and women in uniform and have an opportunity to mingle and meet our guests in a fun and informal setting. The event will feature our tasty local cuisine, entertainment, and great company!

There's still time if members are interested in sponsoring military guests. A $500 pledge today covers 4 military guests and 2 representatives from your company. If you would like to attend, please call our office to arrange for reservations.

This event is open only to Chamber members and our military guests arranged through the corresponding local commands.

2024 Board Elections

This year's Nominating Committee, led by Chairman Ed Untalan, is seeking members in good standing interested in filling working positions on the 2024 Chamber Board. Eight seats are available: six three-year seats and two alternate director, one-year seats will need to be filled by eligible candidates. The Chamber Board has a legal responsibility to make decisions and promote activities that benefit the Chamber and its mission. Members interested in serving on the Chamber Board are encouraged to contact any member of the Nominating Committee:

The last opportunity for candidates to declare their interest to run for the Board will take place on Wednesday, October 25th at the Chamber's general membership meeting. Nominations from the floor will be called at the beginning of the meeting and the Nominating Committee Chairman will close the floor immediately following the call for nominations. Humanitarian Crisis in Israel: The U.S. Chamber's Response

Over the weekend, Israel declared war on Hamas after the group launched a devastating surprise attack from Gaza, killing hundreds.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce strongly condemns the heinous attacks on Israel. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the people of Israel and stand in solidarity with them as they battle the scourge of terrorism.

What we're doing: We are mobilizing support for the victims in partnership with the Jewish Federations of North America and other organizations.

We are also in touch with our partners from the Israeli government and AmCham Israel as we further explore ways for the U.S. Chamber and the business community to provide humanitarian assistance during this difficult time.

What you can do: If you are seeking to provide humanitarian support, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation is compiling a list of organizations responding to the most immediate needs:

• Jewish Agency for Israel - North American Council is giving immediate aid to those whose homes were directly hit by rockets, and supporting the injured and evacuated to hospitals as well as families of the deceased.

• American Friends of Magen David Adom  have launched an urgent appeal to financially support Magen David Adom (MDA). MDA, also known as the Red Star of David, is the Israeli National Society that is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. MDA provides emergency medical and blood banking services in Israel.

Inflation hits home: Consumer spending growth slows...

Consumer spending has driven the remarkable economic growth we have seen this year. But there are signs consumers are starting to buckle under the weight of inflation.

Why it matters: Consumers continue defying economic analysts’ predictions that their spending ability was sapped.

By the numbers:

• Inflation-adjusted spending was up 0.1%, essentially flat from July.
• Inflation-adjusted spending on goods was down 0.2% with spending on bigger-ticket durable goods down 0.3%.
• Spending on services rose 0.2% after inflation.

Be smart: While consumer spending was flat, consumer savings fell sharply in August. They have used credit cards and COVID-era savings to keep up with inflation, and their savings are likely depleted.

SBA Small Business Awards

National Small Business Week is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate their achievement and the essential contributions they make across the country.

To nominate a small business owner in your area or download related forms, criteria and guidelines, visit SBA's website. All nominations must be submitted electronically by 6:00 am December 8, 2023 (CHsT). The award will be presented during the NSWBS Award ceremony in Washington D.C. from Sunday, April 28, Monday, April 29, 2023.

The SBA's signature award during NSBW is the Small Business Person of the Yea. A small Business owner from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam will be selected for individual Sate Winner award. The states award winners will complete for the title of National Small Business Person of the Year.
