Coinciding with the re-publication of the long-out-of-print Lutyens Memorial Volumes, the ICAA is pleased to present this lecture delivered by Clive Aslet, which was filmed in London. Here, Clive provides a thorough exploration of Edwin Lutyens' longstanding and fruitful relationship with the publication Country Life, and with its founder Edward Hudson, who was also a patron of the architect.
Clive Aslet is an award-winning architectural historian and journalist, acknowledged as a leading authority on Britain and its way of life. He has published around twenty non-fiction titles, including The Last Country Houses and The American Country House. Clive was editor of the magazine Country Life for 13 years and continues to contribute to newspapers and magazines, as well as broadcasting on radio and television.

A Profile of African American Architect Julian Abele: The Shadows are All Mine examines the life and career of the prolific architect Julian Abele, who despite his significant contributions to the classical tradition has long been marginalized. This program makes a thoughtful argument for the indelible mark Abele left on the cities of Philadelphia, New York, and Newport and on Duke University. Hosted by designer and ICAA board member Barbara Eberlein, the program features presentations by David Brownlee, architectural historian at the University of Pennsylvania, and Amy Cohen, great-grand niece of Abele’s longtime friend and collaborator Louis Magaziner. These conversations centralize Abele in the history of classical tradition, a recognition long overdue.

On May 31, 2023, the ICAA celebrated the release of the first volume of the ICAA's republication of the acclaimed Lutyens Memorial Volumes with a lecture delivered by David Frazer Lewis, Associate Professor of Architectural History at the University of Oxford. His talk explores the seldom-told story of the genesis of the Memorial Volumes, amidst the austerity, rationing, and ascendant modernism of postwar Britain. The presentation, held in partnership with Lutyens Trust America, traces the Volumes' influence in Britain and the United States through the course of the twentieth century, and the way that their reprinting in the 1980s and now in the 2020s, has allowed Lutyens to remain an inspiration to many architects today.

The ICAA holds two drawing tours each year, one international and one in the US. This year’s domestic program took place in Newport, Rhode Island, May 18-21. The program was led by Stephen Chrisman, Partner at Ferguson & Shamamian Architects, and ICAA Fellow, and Tommy Vince, Project Designer at David M. Schwartz Architects. Newport was selected this year as an ideal location to study a sophisticated range of American architecture, with outstanding examples of late seventeenth through eighteenth century colonial architecture; the American Shingle Style of the late nineteenth century; and the so-called “cottages”—large stone country houses based on European Renaissance villas and palazzo—all within short walking distances.
The Christopher H. Browne Drawing Tours honor the generosity, leadership, and legacy of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s late Trustee, Mr. Christopher H. Browne.
