Recognizing Our Kentucky

Work Zone Heroes

National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is scheduled for April 17-21. This year’s theme is “You play a role in work zone safety. Work with us!”

In 2022, there were 1,083 construction zone crashes, 272 injuries, and five fatalities in Kentucky. In fact, struck-by injuries are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries in the construction industry.

Take time at your agency to pause during the workday for safety demonstrations, discussions about safety policies, and other prevention steps.

Finally, join us in recognizing our work zone heroes throughout the state. Thank you for all you do.

"Protect yourself, protect your crew,

protect the public."

- Arch Sebastian, T2 Instructor

Apply Now for 2023 Safe Streets for All Grant

The fiscal year (FY) 2023 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for Safe Streets and Roads for All grants is now live on Grants.gov and open for applications.

The deadline for applications is July 10, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. ET.

The program provides funding for MPOs, towns, transit agencies, and multijurisdictional groups through two types of grants.

  1. Action Plan Grants which develop, update or support a comprehensive safety action plan for submitting agencies, or
  2. Implementation Grants which implement projects identified in a safety action plan.

Safety action plans are similar to Local Road Safety Plans recently introduced to Kentucky by KYTC and FHWA and supported by UK/T2. These plans, which must meet specific requirements established by the program, serve as the basis for project identification and prioritization to direct implementation funding. Once developed, the Safety Action Plan may be used to pursue funding through the SS4A program or the KYTC Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).

Contact Safety Circuit Rider, Adam Kirk at adam.kirk@uky.edu for application assistance.

Work Zone Safety Toolkit for

Commercial Motor Vehicles

Work zones present many challenges for trucks and buses – narrow lanes, sudden stops, traffic pattern shifts, and uneven road surfaces require all drivers to stay alert. In fact, large trucks are over represented in work zone crashes, making up nearly one-third of fatal work zone crashes. It’s critical that all road users approach work zones with caution and do their part to keep the road safe for everyone.

2023 KYTC Office of the Secretary Safety Conference: Pay It Forward

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is holding the annual 2023 Secretary's Office of Safety Conference in Lexington, KY, on May 2-4, 2023.

The purpose of the meeting is to provide safety personnel with the opportunity to learn about pertinent information shared by great minds in the field and give them the ability to network with colleagues from across the state. The conference will provide statewide personnel with in-person opportunities to participate in teambuilding exercises, research, and training, as well as to "pay forward" knowledge and experiences in ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all employees.

The mission of the Secretary's Office of Safety (SOS) is to eliminate employee injuries by creating and communicating a culture of safety through servant leadership that encourages everyone at KYTC to make safe choices.

2023 Kentucky Lifesavers Conference

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is holding the 2023 Lifesavers Conference in Louisville, KY, April 17-20, 2023.

The Lifesavers Conference is sponsored by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Office of Highway Safety. The four-day conference will cover a variety of noteworthy topics from Safe Streets for All to CPS recertification.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together a combination of engineering, education, emergency services, enforcement, and transportation safety warriors to share best practices, research, and innovations that are proven to work.

The conference will provide information on both successful programs and emerging issues to individuals who work to reduce fatalities and injuries on Kentucky’s roadways and provide opportunities for networking, discussion, and information sharing.

KTC Research:

Rapid Pothole Repair

in Concrete Bridge Decks

Using traditional repair materials (e.g., rapid-set concrete) to repair potholes and spalls in reinforced concrete (RC) bridge decks is time-consuming, labor intensive, and requires many tools and equipment (e.g., concrete deck saw, pneumatic hammers, air compressor, concrete mixer). This report described KTC’s effort to identify an epoxy repair material for patching concrete surfaces that eliminates the need to saw cut the deck around the pothole, remove deteriorated concrete, and install an appropriate patching material.
