Upcoming Service

Holy, Silent, Listening

Rev. Jaimie Dingus

10:45 a.m., Sunday, August 18th, 2024

Let's be still and breathe together. Let's honor the grace that finds us in our moments of gathering. Let words, music, and silence fill our hearts. Join Rev. Jaimie and Susan Hazen Guthrie for a service of poetry and reflection, in anticipation of Susan's upcoming book of poems, "We held our breath, the birds and I."

Choir News

The UUCH Choir is taking a break during July and August. Regular rehearsals will resume in September.

Nursery Care

Nursery care will be available during the service
from 10:30-12:15.

Little ones can be signed in and out upon arrival and departure in the RE wing.

Painting the Beams

Dear UUCH,

We are so grateful that the rotten A-Frame beams have been repaired and replaced so that our building will be structurally sound for generations to come! The last step in this process is deciding on paint colors for the repaired beams. Follow this link to a survey where you can cast your vote and, if appropriate, indicate your willingness to help with the painting. The survey will be open until midnight on Tuesday August 27th. Results will be shared during worship on Sunday, September 1st!

Welcome Newest UUCH Members!

On Sunday, August 11th, UUCH welcomed new members into covenant during a brief ceremony. The new members are pictured above as follows (left to right):

Back (standing): Chad McElligott, Avery, Elizabeth Seifried, Kenneth Jackson, Rev. Jaimie Dingus, Will Simon

Front (seated): Trao Wesley, Melisa Restrepo-Rios, Noah, Ivan Rios, Taylor Delacey, Karla Spriestersbach, David Snyder, Kent de Jong

We appreciate the commitment these new members have made to our church community with their gifts of time, financial support and talents. We look forward to working together to fulfill the mission of this church.

Waiting List for CPR AED Training

There is one student slot available for a fully paid for CPR AED training class on Saturday, September 7th from 9am-12pm. Please see Shalin or Trao if you are interested! We will be happy to also maintain a waiting list for the next opportunity when funding becomes available.

Habitat for Humanity Home Build

As was announced from the pulpit in July, UUCH will be partnering with Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley this fall to build a house for a disadvantaged client. UUCH volunteers will be working alongside other volunteers to build a house from the ground up. This effort will require many volunteers over several weeks & weekends, so many volunteer opportunities will be available even if you have never worked on a house!

See the Habitat for Humanity website for more information: https://habitatrivervalley.org/

A Signup Genius will be set up once we know the build schedule.

If you have any questions or are interested in helping out, please email social.justice@uuch.org

Safety Survey - 2024

The Safety Committee has created a survey to better understand safety interests and concerns to better serve the congregation. Due date is Sept. 16th. Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey at the link and feel free to request a hardcopy from Shalin or Trao. Take the survey here.

Elders Luncheon

Elders of UUCH, mark your calendars for a Luncheon on Wednesday, September 18th at 11:30 in Fellowship Hall. This will be a time for food and fellowship, and for Rev. Jaimie to get to spend some extra time with the oldest members of our community! Lunch will be provided, and more details and RSVP information are to follow!

Ghosts Over the Boiler book discussion

Ghosts Over the Boiler is a unique book about a decades-old organization, Project Hope to

Abolish the Death Penalty, that was founded and operated by people facing capital punishment in Alabama. We were given a talk by the author, Katie Owens-Murphy, last February if this sounds familiar. Ghosts Over the Boiler is a curated collection of poetry, visual art, photographs, essays, creative writings, and other archival materials that have emerged from Alabama's death row. This group was founded at Holman Correctional Facility and has been operating autonomously since 1989 toward its mission to abolish the death penalty in Alabama and in the nation.

We will be discussing this book after the Sunday services in October and November (NOTE: this will be after choir practice). If you are interested in abolishing capital punishment, start reading this book now and plan on joining us for discussion this fall! See ARE table to sign up and more info for ordering book.

Upcoming Social Justice Events

Your participation is needed! Below is a list of local social justice events sponsored by groups that UUCH and/or our members support.

Here are some standing opportunities to get engaged with local organizations:

Little Food Pantry

Signups for the LFP have slowed to a trickle unless you are filling it without signing up in the signup genius. It’s hard to know. Our LFP is a much needed service to the neighborhood. Fill it with nutritious foods. Folks rarely take garbanzo beans or lentils (even though they are nutritious). Let’s try to keep the pantry going! Please, if you are able to fill it up, please note your name in the Genius. Also, you can bring non perishables to church, as there are baskets. A big thank you to all who do contribute!
