Message from Our CEO, Veronica Cool

Colegas,
Summer is almost here, with hope scenting the air as we return to more in-person engagement! It is also at time to reflect since June brings the midway point in the year; to examine our progress, lessons learned and plans for the future...We all know much has changed, but we still have work to do.
In 2020, we saw our country divided by a dual pandemic: racial inequities exacerbated by COVID-19. In 2021, we continue the fight to end both. Further emphasizing the importance of commemorating Juneteenth.
June 19, 1865, marks the oldest nationally celebrated remembrance of the end of slavery in the United States. We recognize that Black history is American history, and by observing Juneteenth, we are taking a step forward from a haunting past. I am optimistic that as individuals and community members, we will do our part to ensure racial injustice comes to an end in our country, as we continue to build a more unified nation for all.
We also #gopurple during June to support Alzheimer’s and Brain Health Awareness Month. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias affect more than six million Americans and kills more people than breast and prostate cancer combined. Sadly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Alzheimer’s and dementia deaths increased by 16%.
Back in 2018, I danced in honor of my Papi, who passed away from Alzheimer's, to raise awareness (plus who doesn't love dancing in front of a 1,000+ people?) And we are proud to continue our collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association by hosting community forums, in English & Spanish, across the region to share these resources. Hope to "see" you during these forums!
Lastly, a tremendous GRACIAS to those who have fulfilled the role of father, especially my own Don Juan, pictured above with 7 year old me. Happy Father’s Day! Thank you for being the protectors, adventurers, bad-jokesters, and heroes of our lives.
And to you, I give thanks. Every day I am grateful to share this space with you all, remembering that when we work together, we succeed together. Juntos podemos más.
Till next time,
Veronica Cool
CEO & Hispanic Strategist
