(Millbrook, NY) – Supported by local businesses, individuals, volunteers and, of course, the kids themselves, the 2023 4-H A-Fair to Remember gala fundraiser was an overwhelming success. Held courtesy of Millbrook Winery on Sunday June 4, approximately 130 guests enjoyed a fun-filled event. Our 4-H’ers wowed visitors with their knowledge of their projects including agriculture, animals, bees, arts and crafts and shooting sports. At every booth, the youth had activities and often giveaways to engage and educate attendees. The food was excellent with a variety of food trucks. The kids were especially happy with the free popcorn, cotton candy and shaved ice. A star of the show was the authentic “Fair Shakes” provided by the Dutchess County Dairy Committee. A silent auction ran throughout the event with over 30 prizes up for grabs. Auctioneer Marc Tommell joined us to sell 7 quality items, creating excitement and adding to the festivities.
The gala raised over $25,000 which will be used to support up to 350 children to participate in the Dutchess County Fair. These youth have been working on projects all year to earn the right to exhibit. As costs rise, we will provide individual scholarships in partnership with the Dutchess Land Conservancy, as well as fun activities for all including dorm ‘sleepovers’ with movies and popcorn, a Barn Bash including tug-of-war and ice cream, and a free family pasta dinner. In 2022, we were also able to bring over 40 children from immigrant families to the fair to learn about agriculture and experience this incredible Dutchess tradition. Through our partnership with Dover Free Union School District and Northeast Dutchess Immigrant Services, we plan to do the same this year.

This event not only exceeded its’ fundraising target, it brought our 4-H community together and served as a showcase to others as to just how impactful 4-H is on the lives of our young people. The event will run in a slightly different format in 2024 to enable us to engage even more support and give the kids the kudos they deserve. Contact jr825@cornell.edu with questions.
