Remember

That’s what the thief said on the Cross, “Remember me.”
Luke 23:43

The word, “remember,” has stayed with me for many years and promoted these thoughts.

When you remember someone, it means that you carry the memory of that person, which left a mark of who he or she was and what they meant and continues to mean to you.

You can summon that person in your mind even though countless years may stand between you. It means that should you meet again, your shared moments reconnect you. It means that even when they die, you can still see their face, hear their voice and speak to them in your heart.

For as long as you remember them, they are never entirely lost. Conjured memories help to authenticate their existence. Knowing that we are remembered by someone when we feel sad helps to console us and brings happiness.

If you forget me, one of the ways I remember who I was will be gone. If you forget me, part of who I am will be gone.

“Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom,” the thief said from his cross (Luke 23:43).

There are perhaps no more human words in all of Scripture, no prayer we can pray so well.
