From the Desk of Darrel Burnett
Executive Director
As we turn the page on June and raise the curtain on July 2022, there isn’t another month on the calendar that is in the same stratosphere with July when comparing a single month’s significance to our country. Since we are just three days away from celebrating our great nation’s 246th birthday, it is a natural reaction to assume that I am referring to July 4th…but the month of July is so much more! Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Sherman, and their fellow patriots staked their fortunes, and their lives, to establish the freedom we too often take for granted. But July’s impact on our freedom extends far beyond our nation’s birthday. July is the reason we have the freedom to go anywhere we choose at any time…… in an automobile.
136 years ago, on July 3rd, 1886, local newspapers documented Karl Benz, of Mercedes Benz fame, driving this three-wheeled automobile on the streets of Mannheim, Germany. That day the automobile was officially born.
It doesn’t matter that Mr. Benz was only able to coax 10 mph out of his creation, 20 mph slower than a spirited horse of the day, he won the ultimate race! Karl Benz will forever be first to the finish line because his name was on the birth certificate. What Karl Benz drove that day wasn’t yet called an automobile or a car, it was simply referred to as patent number 37435 for a “vehicle powered by a gas engine.”
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Mr. Benz could come back for just one day to see what has become of his marvelous invention? Could he ever imagine how it continues to shape the world in ways that we have yet to experience? Just think of the expression on his face witnessing the 1750 hp SSC Tuatara American supercar shattering the world record at an inconceivable 316 mph on a seven-mile stretch of Nevada highway.
What Karl Benz started in July his American counterpart Henry Ford continued on American soil 7 years later. Henry Ford sold his very first Model A (not to be confused with the later and more popular Model A) on July 23rd, 1903, having spent nearly every penny he had to get it to market. His first Model A was sold to Dr. Ernst Pfenning of Chicago, IL. With less than $250 left in company coffers, Henry Ford’s future hung in the balance. That first sale led to 1,750 over the next two years and Ford Motor Company never looked back. At last count, Ford Motor Company has sold well over 100 million vehicles in its history.
July is the month of record for other major milestones among them the founding of Alfa Romeo, Chrysler’s purchase of the Dodge Brothers company and the list goes on. If history is any indication, the automotive fireworks in July won’t end on the 4th!

July 21, 1904 Lous Rigolly became the first person in the world to drive a car over 100 mph when he and his French-made Gobron-Brillie race car topped out at 103.561 mph on a beach in Ostend, Belgium. Mr. Rigolly’s record would only stand for 3 months but his reputation as being the first to top the century mark will last forever!

A Gorgeous 1964 Rolls Royce Makes a Grand Entrance!
Those who attended our concert honoring Paul McCartney’s 80th birthday at the Meyer Theatre featuring Beatles tribute band American English received a special treat! The audience was surprised by a special video before the concert featuring this very rare 1964 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. It is 1 of 3 in the world ever produced with a James Young body and is owned by our good friend Jerry Muenster. American English had the ride of their lives in this special Rolls as they were delivered to the front of the Meyer Theatre and greeted by screaming teenagers played by the Green Bay Southwest High School choral group.
