October 6 - October 15, 2023 | |
Over lunch on October 15, we'll begin our next round of Confirmation/Reception classes. The Book of Common Prayer defines Confirmation as "the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop." Because the Episcopal Church offers Baptism to people of all ages, including infants and very young children, we have this additional rite to allow us to claim the faith we have inherited. Reception is a rite for those who have already been confirmed in another tradition and now consider themselves at home in The Episcopal Church. These two rites are also the way to join the church officially.
We don't prepare for Confirmation by memorizing and repeating facts. Instead, we talk about what is distinct about this particular way of living in the gospel, and then explore together what is distinct about our own lives of faith. It's a reflection in which all Christians try to engage. If you might be ready for this next step in living faith in community, email me. We'll meet for six weeks over lunch from October 15 through December 3 (omitting two weeks). Anyone who wants a refresher course is also welcome!

|
Join us Sunday at 9:30 AM in the Berlin Room for a study of St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans.
Someone reading St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans has repeatedly been a turning point in Christian history: whether it’s Augustine becoming a Christian through hearing Romans, Martin Luther starting the Protestant Reformation after teaching a class on Romans, or John Wesley feeling his heart “strangely warmed” while dropping into a bible study on Romans. This fall we’ll have our own encounter with Romans, reading the whole book over nine weeks. For more information contact Fr. Eric.

ZOOM Book Study
Tuesdays, 7:30 PM, Beginning October 3
Grateful: The Subversive Practice of Giving Thanks led by Barbara Coleman.
“Every day there are reasons not to be grateful. Terrible, distressing, painful, and awful things happen all the time. Yet gratitude is a defiance, of sorts, the defiance of kindness in the face of anger, of connection in the face of division, and of hope in the face of fear. Gratefulness does not acquiesce to evil–it resists evil.”
Books are available in the Narthex on Sunday and in the parish office during the week. $20 donation. Sign up on the website, so that we can forward class schedules and updates.
