Flood Insurance Premium Changes Mapped
If you have Flood Insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program you might want to pay attention.

Starting October 1, Risk Rating 2.0 will fundamentally change the way FEMA rates a property’s flood risk and prices insurance for the more than five million National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policyholders.

The Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM), in collaboration with The Pew Charitable Trusts, unveiled interactive maps that show where flood insurance rates are expected to decrease, increase, or remain the same — and by how much — under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) new pricing structure: Risk Rating 2.0

Tarpon Cove Update
Restoration work continues at Tarpon Cove in Lake Worth Lagoon. Approximately 108,500 cubic yards of sand generated from the Town of Palm Beach marina dredging project was placed at Tarpon Cove.

The next phase of the project begins mid-September with the placement of rock and sand to construct two northern mangrove islands and seagrass habitat. Completion of this phase of the project, including construction of two mangrove shoreline planters, is anticipated for spring 2022. This portion of the project is funded by three Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) agreements totaling $2.1 million. Additionally, State of Florida Legislative Appropriations and County funds are also contributing towards the project.

One of the most visible successes of Lake Worth Lagoon restoration projects like Tarpon Cove is the use of these sites by threatened Florida shorebirds for nesting. One species in particular, American oystercatchers, have successfully raised chicks at Snook Islands, Bryant Park, Grassy Flats and Tarpon Cove.

Staff also observed a colony of 20 black skimmers and 50 least terns nesting on Tarpon Cove. Other birds observed utilizing the created islands at Tarpon Cove include great blue herons, black-necked stilts, Wilson plovers, white ibis, roseate spoonbills and a wide variety of gulls and terns.

Tarpon Cove also serves as important habitat for several juvenile fish species. FWC staff started monitoring the fisheries at Tarpon Cove in January 2021. During the last monitoring period, April-June 2021, staff recorded blue crabs, mojarras, silver jenny and juvenile shrimp at the site. Oysters are also loving Tarpon Cove, covering the rocks surrounding the islands.

Code Enforcement Lien Amnesty Program
Palm Beach County
Board of County Commissioners
Authorize a Code Enforcement
Lien Amnesty Program

The County has over 1,000 outstanding Code Enforcement liens on residential and non-residential properties. This two-month program will enable property owners/lienholders to apply to have 100% of the outstanding lien balance forgiven and the lien released. The program will run from October 1, 2021, to November 30, 2021.

In order for a property owner/lienholder to participate in the program, the property must be in compliance with all county codes, file an application before November 30, 2021, and pay a $250 nonrefundable application fee.

As of July 31, 2021, the Office of Finance Management and Budget holds a total of 1,079 recorded liens on residential and non-residential properties. Of these liens, 79% are currently in compliance.

This program may motivate property owners who are not in compliance to make improvements that will bring their property into compliance. In addition, this program will help to stimulate the sale of properties that may have been otherwise unmarketable due to the encumbrance of Code Liens and allow property owners to refinance their properties.

The program is from October 1 until November 30, 2021
