Water quality monitoring update & volunteers needed

Our 2023 monitoring season is now well underway. Thanks to a generous grant from the John Sage Foundation, we are expanding our monitoring program to support a full season of bi-weekly baseline monitoring on Echo Lake, as well as increased data collection on four small ponds in our watershed (Hales, Kimball, Tilton and Whittier), monitoring a total of 13 lakes and ponds this season.

Our monitoring program could not exist without the volunteers that work alongside our staff each year. Trained volunteers can become certified to assist with data collection. Untrained volunteers are also vital, providing water access and/or a boat ride so that our certified staff can collect data and water samples. If you are interested in volunteering to support this vital program, please visit our website.

Protecting Loons from Lead Poisoning

Photo: Jennifer Lummis

On June 20th, Gov. Janet Mills signed LD 958, the bill to expand protections for loons from lead poisoning, into law. This legislation phases out the use and sale of small-sized painted lead jigs. Loons ingest a great deal of fishing tackle that is either left behind, or that is in fish they consume. Death by lead is horrific and avoidable. This law closes a loophole in Maine’s lead fishing tackle laws.

Clean, Drain, Dry bill signed into law

On June 16th, LD 92, the “Clean, Drain and Dry” bill was signed into law. This bill requires trailered boats to be drained before entering and after leaving lakes. Read the bill text here.

July is Lakes Appreciation Month

To focus attention on the value of lakes and the threats they face, the North American Lake Management Society started Lakes Appreciation Month.

You work and play on them. You drink from them. But do you really appreciate them? Growing population, development, and invasive species stress your local lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. All life needs water; let’s not take it for granted!” - NALMS website

Governor Janet Mills recognizes the value of clean, healthy lakes to all Mainers, and has written a letter of support for Lakes Appreciation Month. Read her letter here
