Here Comes Santa! Magical Country Christmas is Tomorrow in Uptown

The holiday season is here and the Lassen County Chamber of Commerce, along with the City of Susanville, are preparing for their annual Magical Country Christmas Celebration which will be held tomorrow, December 2nd, in historic uptown starting at 4:00p.m. on Main Street, which will be closed to traffic for the event.

At 6:00p.m. the Magical Country Christmas parade will start, with floats, dancers and participants moving up Main Street to the tree in front of the Elks Lodge. The big finale of the parade will be the arrival of Santa, the lighting of the tree and fireworks!

Uptown businesses will be open late, and vendors will line the streets with food, beverages, and custom gifts to help with your Christmas shopping.

The chamber’s yearly Christmas party has become tradition in Susanville, with nearly two thousand people expected to show up to help welcome Santa to town.

There will also be food, drink and plenty of hot chocolate and warm beverages to help warm you up.

A massive plow pulls a car from a snow drift in 1934 from UC Davis’ Eastman Studio Collection

Initial Storm Blocks Roads as Autos Stop

December 1, 1934

The first snowfall of the season proved temporarily disastrous to travel on the Susanville-Red Bluff highway last weekend as close to two feet of snow piled up on the Fredonyer Summit to block travel for several hours.

Five snow plows were called into service between Susanville and Red Bluff and travel was impossible for some time until the plows had done their work.

At the present time the road is open and in good condition according to reports by motorists traveling from the bay region and Red Bluff.

The storm appeared to center to the west, leaving the Reno road across the state line in fairly good condition. The fall came as part of the statewide downpour which showered the major portion of Northern California with heavy rains and snow.

Eight cars were stalled between Susanville and Westwood on Sunday, five leaving the road as the thick snow made traction impossible.

With the arrival of tow cars and snow plows the road was reopened and put in good shape again.
