National Farmers Market Week is celebrated annually during the first week in August, making the celebration August 4th – August 10th this year. This is a great time to support your local farmers and try some new, fresh produce. Nothing compares to biting into fresh, local fruits or vegetables. Find a new fruit, vegetable, or herb at a local farm stand or farmers market and ask for tips on how to prepare it. It might just become your new favorite food! Farmers Markets are great places to discover fresh, nutritious, locally grown foods — and for connecting with the people who grow them. There are many reasons to visit your local Farmers Market:
-
Farmers markets offer fruits and vegetables at the peak of their growing season, when they are freshest and taste best
- Shopping at farmers markets helps keep money local
- Farmers markets can help kids feel involved in meal planning and inspire healthier eating habits
- Farmers markets provide transparency about what products are, where they come from, and how they were grown
- You can ask vendors questions, and some farms even offer tours. Farmers markets can help communities that might not otherwise have access to fresh fruits and vegetables
-
Vendors can educate shoppers, and neighbors can learn about healthy foods and how to prepare them
