WiA Dine & Discuss
We will begin at 6:30 pm with introductions and brief announcements of the WIA Upcoming Events & Programs. We will wrap up by 7:00 pm and groups of four WiA members will head out to their selected restaurants to network over dinner and drinks*. We will provide conversation prompts around the themes of connecting, supporting, elevating, and celebrating women in the field.

Hacienda Heights Design Tour
Hacienda Heights now (and again) provides homes, indoor amenities, and outdoor active spaces for low-income seniors within walking distance of the Richmond Transit Station. Originally completed in 1966 as public housing, the project would eventually close due to compounded neglect. The project’s reinvestment is a long-awaited revitalization not only for the 150-home community, but for the broader neighborhood in downtown Richmond.

The Black Panther Design Tour
Located in West Oakland, The Black Panther is a groundbreaking affordable housing community that supports very low-income and formerly incarcerated individuals. Working with local non-profit Oakland and the World Enterprise (OAW) and McCormack Barron Salazar (MBS), MWA designed a five-story apartment building with residential, community, and commercial spaces.

WUI - What Makes It Critical? (1.5 LU|HSW)
This talk is about the growing need for climate adaptation, through mindful design in the WUI. According the California State Fire Marshal, California’s seasonally dry Mediterranean climate lends itself to wildfires, and in an effort to better prepare, CAL FIRE is required to classify the severity of fire hazard in areas of California. the talk will cover which zones are highly fire prone and what precautions need to be taken.

Join us for firm tours of 4 East Bay Area architect neighbors in downtown Oakland to learn more about each firm and see examples of their work and office space. We will tour Gensler, PYATOK, Lowney Architecture, and KTGY.

SEO for Architects: Expanding Beyond Word-of-Mouth (1 LU)
Architects rely on websites to market themselves, and many spend thousands of dollars to create beautiful sites. While these websites impress current clients and are a great reference for potential clients, they can do much more for architects. Through SEO, architects can attract people they wouldn't normally meet in the real world to their site and eventually turn them into clients.

An Inside Look at Carbon Accounting: BCCA & Cal Green (1.5 LU|ZNCD)
Along with energy conservation measures, sustainability trends are continuously becoming more robust with high focus on carbon emissions, product transparency and resiliency. The Buy California Clean Act and the new Cal Green 2024 code cycle have placed an intense focus on Type III Product specific and Factory specific EPD Counts as they pertain to Embodied Carbon and its impact on the GWP.

ABI May 2024: Business conditions at architecture firms continue to soften
The AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score declined to 42.4 for the month, as more firms reported a decrease in billings in May than in April. In addition, there is increasing softness in the pipeline of new work coming into firms. While inquiries into new projects continued to increase, they did so at a slower pace than in recent months. And the value of new signed design contracts declined further in May, following a small decrease in April. Despite the fact that the high inflation of the last few years has largely receded, elevated interest rates continue to cause hesitation among many clients.
