Often times when we hear the word "sheep" we are led to think of someone who blindly follows others. Having a friend in high school who raised sheep for his FFA project, I know that this image of sheep may not be wholly accurate. If you have ever worked with sheep and attempted to get them to go into a pen or to a different location, they can easily have a mind and will of their own. They do not always naturally follow. This can often be said of livestock in general.

This Sunday we will be exploring together what it means to be the sheep of the Lord's. The psalmist and Jesus using the imagery of sheep and shepherds in our passages for this week. Since both the Hebrew people were nomadic people for a great portion of their history, they were very familiar with moving sheep to various locations. Both the historical Hebrew people and many of the hearers of Jesus's words were either shepherds or knew shepherds well, they would relate to the imagery of sheep and shepherds.

I find this imagery to be very applicable to those of us who strive to follow Jesus. Like actual sheep, we can be followers, but we can also be willful people who often attempt to go our own way. We may resist the guidance of the shepherd. We can easily place ourselves in danger and become in need of a shepherd to save us.

I encourage you this week to consider what it means to be a sheep in the Lord's flock. I look forward to exploring this with you during worship on Sunday morning.

Blessings,

Pastor Mark

The full circle of gun violence prevention

Sometimes things come full circle. The scene: At a Presbyterian Peacemaking Program conference at Ghost Ranch in 2010, a filmmaker from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance heeds a plea from retired pastor James Atwood to make a documentary about gun violence and its impact on families and communities.

BALMORAL SISTERS

“TEA PARTY”

Friday, July 19, 5-6:30 pm

at Olive Garden

Our Balmoral Sisters “Tea Party” will be this Friday,

July 19, 5-6:30 pm, at Olive Garden (Poplar and I-240).

The tea parties are held on the 3rd Friday of each month, and all ladies of Balmoral are welcome. This is a Dutch-treat social hour - You can choose tea or anything else on the menu!

We have to reserve seats, so an RSVP is important. If you plan to attend or if you have any questions, call Kristen Gurlen (901-275-4492) or Mary Schmitz (901-496-2799).

HOME COMMUNION OPPORTUNITY

A team has been formed to provide the celebration of Holy Communion in homes on the Sundays which we celebrate it in worship. The first Sunday will be August 4. If you are interested in having communion brought to you in your home, please contact the church office at 901-767-7510.

Rev Elizabeth Dick has organized the team and will be scheduling visits.

Remember the first time you came to Balmoral?

Chances are you may recall someone warmly greeting you as you walked in the front door, welcoming you and encouraging you to fill out a name badge. Their smile made you feel “at home” even before you set foot in the sanctuary. Our congregation is a very friendly one, but the Welcoming Team wants to make sure no one is overlooked, so we need a special greeter before each worship service.

Each greeter would sign up for one Sunday a month to be at the front door about 10:40 a.m. to open the inside door to everyone who comes – members and visitors alike – and greet each one with a smile and a welcome. (Soon we also will have a gift bag the greeter can hand out to each visitor “family”). It is a simple “job” but one which can make a great difference in making sure all who come to Balmoral feel welcome.

If you are interested in helping, please contact Linda Warren, Janice Hill or Nancy Jordan.
