The Governor's Message

The Kiwanis International Convention in Denver had a theme of “Explore the Possibilities.” The Nebraska-Iowa District had 46 members registered for the convention. I saw our delegates interact, listen, enjoy and work together with the other delegates from around the world.

I want to share my experience with you. I want you to experience what I experienced.

HOUSE OF DELEGATE BUSINESS

Two important bylaw questions will be on the agenda at the Aug. 3 Nebraska-Iowa House of Delegates.

To keep the Nebraska-Iowa District’s bylaws in alignment with Kiwanis International and to remain as a district in good standing, the delegates will be asked to consider passage of the Standard Form District Bylaws. The new Standard Form District Bylaws were updated by Kiwanis International last year to incorporate changes in operations. The last standard version was issued in 2014. There are changes throughout the Standard Bylaws and the form in its entirety is being offered for adoption. To read the proposed new bylaws, with changes marked with underlines (additions) and strikethroughs (deletes), click the button below.

The Nebraska-Iowa District Board has also recommended Amendment 1 go before the delegates. The Awards and Scholarship Committee and the Past Lieutenant Governors Committee have long been special committees in the District. However, they are not standing committees since not written into the bylaws. The board asks they become standing committees to emphasize their importance and impact. Read Amendment 1 below.

The 2024 annual meeting of the Nebraska-Iowa House of Delegates will be at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at the West Des Moines Sheraton in West Des Moines, Iowa. In addition to election of district officers, there will be bylaw modernization and a bylaw amendment put before the delegates.

Bylaw Modernization Intent
Revised Standard Bylaws
Bylaw Amendment 1

Each club is entitled to seat up to three (3) delegates at the House of Delegates meeting. Club delegates shall be active members of the clubs they represent. (The Lieutenant Governor or a past Lieutenant Governor may represent any club in their division not otherwise represented.) There is no voting by proxy. By bylaws and policy, delegates need to be be convention registrants.

Club secretaries are asked to certify their club's delegates by July 26, 2024.

Thank you for participating in this contest. District leaders hope you enjoyed the contest and the winners will benefit from their participation. Please keep working on Membership. Increased membership results in increased IMPACT.

HELP NEEDED WITH NEW CLUB

By Brian Wells, District vice governor and membership chair

We are very excited to be opening a new club in Orange City, Iowa!!!

We could use a little help in two areas.

First, we are looking for those who are comfortable making phone calls to members of the community of Orange City and setting up appointments for our Kiwanis teams to talk to them about becoming members of the Kiwanis Club in the Orange City area. Please let me know if you're interested in this very important position. We need between four and six callers. You will be trained by a Kiwanis International professional and provided with names, phone numbers and scripts before you make your first call!

Secondly, we're looking for referrals in the Orange City area that would make good Kiwanis members. If you have relatives, friends or associates that you feel would enjoy helping children and the community thrive please send their point of contact information to me and we will have our teams contact them to offer the opportunity to serve. Please include name, phone and email. We won't embarrass you I assure you!

So help us help the Orange City area with their new Kiwanis Club! We would like to have caller volunteers identified within the next two weeks. Referrals (folks in the Orange City) that you think would enjoy being part of the Kiwanis team in the next three weeks!

My contact information is 785-458-2824 or tankerbanker@gmail.com

Thanks for your assistance!!!

DENVER REPORT

This year's International Convention was held July 3-6 in Denver. There were 46 Kiwanians and six guests registered for the convention. This year's group photo was taken following the Friday morning caucus at our hotel, Hyatt House.

The Friday evening District Social, which was held with four other districts, was also well attended. Nebraska-Iowa had the most registered with 33. Other districts taking part were Kansas, Texas-Oklahoma, Montana and Pacific Northwest. Gov. Dale Doudna and Gov. Elect John Boltz represented our district in the Cornhole Tournament. Pacific Northwest won the tournament.

The House of Delegates was held on Saturday morning. One of the amendments put before the delegates was a $25 increase in international dues and required a super majority vote for passage. The vote in favor was 86.95%, making the dues increase effective Oct. 1.

At the start of the coming Kiwanis year, annual international dues will be $77. Additionally, for members in clubs in the U.S. and Canada, there is a cost of $8 for Kiwanis publications, $18 for liability insurance and $4 for Directors & Officers Insurance. District annual dues remain $40.

FOUNDATION, CHILDREN'S FUND RECEIVE GIFTS

Jim and Mark Hutzell recently presented a very generous donation on behalf of the Floyd and Carol Hutzell Family Trust to the Nebraska-Iowa District Foundation. Floyd Hutzell played an active and dedicated role in Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis District for many years. His service included administrator for the District Aktion Club in the District.

Floyd and Carol left a generous donation to both the Kiwanis International Children’s Fund, as well as the Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis Foundation.

Pictured are Lenora Hanna, vice president of the Kiwanis International Children’s Fund; Shirley Daugherty, president of the Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis District Foundation; Jim Hutzell; and Tracey Domgard, vice-president of the Nebraska-Iowa Kiwanis Foundation.

CHILDREN'S FUND NEWS

Rather than focusing on a single use for this fundraising campaign, as we did with IDD and MNT, the Children’s Fund staff listened to Kiwanians who want to serve children in their own communities. The goal is to raise $25,000,000 in five years to help clubs help their kids. Grants will be available for projects you do in your community to benefit children.

ATTENTION PAST LT. GOVERNORS IN REGION 4

No candidate filings have yet been received in Region 4. Gary Lindgren with Mason City-River City Kiwanis is the current trustee in this region but is not eligible for a third consecutive term. Trustee application remains open in Region 4. Find more information, including qualifications, on the district website or contact the district office.
