Project Spotlight

Asbestos and Lead Services

In a landmark victory for public health, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finally enacted a comprehensive ban on asbestos in the United States in March, 2024. This long-overdue action was hailed as a critical step in protecting workers, families, and communities from the devastating consequences of asbestos exposure.

SOURCE: FACILITIES MANAGEMENT

Hygieneering provides clients with comprehensive Operations and Maintenance Programs and Training to manage facility related asbestos and lead issues.

Hygieneering continues to develop customized programs for the identification and management of environmental issues. We standardize program implementation to ensure consistency for companies that have multiple locations.

Safety News

July is UV Safety Month

Protecting Yourself from the Sun

Too much of the sun's UV rays damages skin, causes eye problems and even weakens your immune system. When enjoying the great outdoors, take the time to protect yourself from the sun.

Eyewear

  • Wear sunglasses that block 99-100 % of harmful UVA and UVB rays
  • Use wraparound design eyewear if possible to protect against sun rays that come from the front and the side

Sunscreen

  • Wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher
  • Apply sunscreen liberally (minimum of 1 oz.) approximately 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply it at least every two hours throughout the day
  • Apply sunscreen approximately 30 minutes prior to applying any insect repellent
  • Best applied prior to sweating

Clothing

  • Use wide-brimmed hats to protect your eyes, head, and neck when authorized
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to cover your arms, legs, and torso when authorized
  • Clothes made from tightly woven fabric provide the best protection

Shade

  • Work and rest in the shade when possible, constructing shaded areas if necessary
  • Short shadow = seek shade! The sun’s rays are strongest between 1000 and 1600 hours
  • This doesn’t mean that there is no risk outside of these time periods - sun risk can still be present in the early morning and later afternoon hours

Drinking Water Testing in GSA Leased Facilities

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) requires baseline drinking water quality testing for all

federally leased spaces during fiscal year 2024. Commercial offices, healthcare, and childcare facilities are to be included in the baseline testing.

Beginning in February building’s with GSA leased tenants will have begun to receive the Public Buildings Service Scope of Work for Drinking Water Testing In GSA Leased Facilities document, which will require the following drinking water quality testing services from a qualified third party, such as Hygieneering, for the following contaminants:

  • Lead
  • Copper
  • Legionella Disease Bacteria
  • Total Coliforms, including E. coli

Lessors have 90 days from receipt of the Unilateral Lease Agreement (ULA) to provide GSA test results

conforming to the scope of work. Lessors must review and act upon these lease amendments when they are received. GSA funds are available to help subsidize the testing cost. They also developed a Water Test ULA Lessor Checklist to assist lessors with meeting the water testing requirements outlined under the ULA.

Please contact David Zeidner at dzeidner@hygieneering.com or 630-654-2550 as soon as possible to

ensure that sampling and results can be provided within the allotted timeframe.
