Upcoming Service

Remembrance Sunday

Rev. Jaimie Dingus

10:45 a.m., Sunday, October 29, 2023

Across culture and religious tradition, at this time of the year people of faith honor those who have died and connect more deeply with their ancestors. For some of us, grief is fresh and felt acutely; for others, it is the dull ache that tinges joyful memories; for others still, we are witnesses to the holy human experience of grief. Whatever is true for your heart today, let us share story, silence and ritual on this special Remembrance Sunday.

Letter from Rev. Jaimie

Dear UUCH,

When I candidated to become your minister, we talked about how this congregation needed to reflect on and rewrite or renew our Mission and Vision Statements. View our current Statements here. As we start year 4 together, after the time of pandemic lock down, enormous shifts in staffing, and the work of regathering as a multiplatform community, it is finally time to focus on Mission and Vision!

Here is how the process will go:

This Fall there will be three in person workshops and 1 virtual workshop on Sundays after church. Each will be the same, so no need to attend more than one, and they will give us time to learn, reflect, talk in small groups and offer feedback. (Childcare will be available for all In-person workshops)

Once we have done that information gathering, a small group of leaders will do the writing and wordsmithing work in order to create a solid draft.

Then we will wrestle with our draft all spring. We will reflect on it in worship, community life, and in more formal feedback sessions.

At the end of this good work, a final proposal will be brought to the congregation to be approved at the Congregational Meeting in June.

I will be there to answer questions along the way, but for now, please mark your calendars and plan to attend one of the 3 Mission Vision Workshops this fall.

This Sunday, October 29th, 12:30–2:00 p.m.

Sunday, November 12th, 12:30–2:00 p.m. ONLINE

Sunday, November 19th, 12:30–2:00 p.m.

If you can please RSVP here, but either way I hope you attend one of these sessions!

CYRE News

Pre-K – Fifth Grade

To recognize the rhythms of nature and the everlasting cycle of beginnings and endings, this weekend we will learn about the Pagan holy day, Samhain (saah-ween). At Samhain, the veil is thin between the world of the living and the realm of the Dead and this facilitates contact and communication. For those who have lost loved ones in the past year, Samhain rituals can be an opportunity to bring closure to grieving and to further adjust to their being in the Otherworld by spiritually communing with them.

Sixth – Twelfth Grade

As we conclude this month of delving into heritage and what it means to us, our YoUUth group will learn more about their local heritage. Named by Indigenous peoples and meaning “camp site,” Alabama (a Muskogean word “Alibamu”) was settled by variety of different Indigenous tribes for centuries. Today, our city is surrounded by a culture that we are entirely alienated from and the goal this weekend is to address that cultural dissonance by uncovering the roots that lay beneath our feet.

If you have difficulty with the site, feel free to email the donation information to service.auction@uuch.org. Please include contact information, description, value, starting bid and a photo. UUCH link for Auctria: https://auctria.events/uuch

  • Bring your donation item to the church starting Sunday November 5 and ending Saturday November 11 at 10:00 a.m.

  • Next: Seek donations from your favorite local business. Just show them our letter available here. Hard copy will also be available at the church.

Pre-event bidding is available for "Silent" auction items up until the day before the event. Raffle tickets may also be purchased online before the event. However, final bids for all items will be taken by the auction team at the event. Those who wish to bid but cannot attend in person are encouraged to use a proxy bidder or attend via Zoom.

In summary, join us on Nov 11 at 5:30 p.m. at UUCH for a lively evening of music, food, fellowship and friendly bidding to raise money for our beloved community.

ARE YOU READY TO BECOME A MEMBER?

If you’ve been attending UUCH long enough to know that this church community feels like your spiritual home, you may be ready to take the next step and become a member of this congregation.

Rev. Jaimie soon plans to welcome new members as they “sign the book” and officially join our church. If you are ready to become a member or would like to find out more about the process, please contact Pam Korb at membership@uuch.org.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERSHIP

Because we are a democratic community, members are collectively vested with responsibility for the congregation. Members may vote at all congregational meetings, be elected to the governing Board, be appointed as committee chairs, and participate in all activities of the congregation.

Because we are a covenanted congregation, members have certain responsibilities to the congregation and to each other. These responsibilities are best fulfilled by:

  • Regular attendance at worship
  • Voting at congregational meetings
  • Making financial contributions
  • Contributing time and talent
  • Spiritual growth and development

UUCH Ofrenda

It’s that time of year again! Once again, our very own Ana DeLacey, of proud Méxican descent, has designed and installed our Día de los Muertos ofrenda. It’s ready for you to help it grow!

You’re invited to bring a photo or memento of loved ones (including pets) who have passed to place on our ofrenda in the sanctuary. The ofrenda will remain up until the afternoon of Sunday, November 5th.

SoulCollage Class

Sunday, November 5 from 1-3 will be the last class in this series. New as well as returning participants are welcome!

Led by certified facilitator Sally Locklear, SoulCollage© is an expressive arts practice done individually or in community. It is an easy, enjoyable, intuitive collage process for self-discovery and community. Participants make their own decks of collaged cards for their personal use from images. Founded by Seena B Frost, the SoulCollage© method helps people discover their unique inner/outer guides and challengers and strengthen their intuition and creativity. You can learn more about SoulCollage© on their official website soulcollage.com

All materials will be provided, but feel free to supplement by gathering images from magazines, online photo sharing website or bring photos of loved ones. If you interested, please let us know so we can plan accordingly. Sign-up sheets are in the fellowship hall or contact Sally Locklear at sallylocklear@mac.com or call 512-657-6169.

Paint a pumpkin for display at UUCH!

The Worship Arts Committee is inviting everyone to paint and decorate a pumpkin for a fall display in our sanctuary and around our campus! Find your own pumpkin of any size/shape/color, paint it with a fall or Halloween theme, and bring it to the Fellowship Hall.

. . . unless you are in our CYRE program. The Worship Arts & CYRE committees will provide pumpkins to be decorated for our CYRE kids.

Suggested parameters for church campus display:

We are discouraging decorating by puncturing the pumpkin in any way, so as to prevent rot.

You may take your pumpkin home with you at any time, especially after the service on October 29. After that, your pumpkin will be removed.

Please avoid clown faces, horror expressions, or gory details. Remember that we have a wide variety of sensitivities in our congregation; especially amongst our youngest kids. Church should always feel SAFE, so keep that in mind when decorating.

Inappropriate or rotting/molding pumpkins will be removed. Get creative!

Children’s Books Collection

Books for children of all ages are still being collected for donation to the Village of Promise, a local non-profit founded to address the needs of children and families in distressed, high-poverty neighborhoods. The Village of Promise provides programs for entire families in an effort to help break the cycle of poverty; it is particularly focused on improving children’s reading skills.

If you have children’s books that you no longer need and would like to donate them, please bring them to the Church and place them in the bin located in the Fellowship Hall.

Thank you so very much for your support!

Circle of Candles

John Czachurski lit a candle of Sorrow: "My father passed away last Monday night. I would appreciate the UU Community keeping me and my family in their thoughts and prayers."

Heather Kyemba lit a candle of Sorrow: "My father-in-law, Henry Kyemba, died last Wednesday in Kampala, Uganda."

LaDawn Edwards lit a candle of Joy: "Betty Clemens, founding member of Huntsville Feminist Chorus, died recently, after 9 decades of Love & Music."
