Dear Local DEC Members,

I am contacting you today to share a unique opportunity for all DEC members and their companies. The NADEC has been approached by X-Culture, a nonprofit that connects students and businesses in working on exporting projects, with a special offer on its unique global research program.

I have personally used X-Culture on some of the projects that my company has been working on to grow our exports, and I was more than impressed with the work that the students completed. X-Culture is offering this valuable program to DEC member companies at a discounted rate for their services.
View the rates here which are based on different company sizes and also the contact information for X-Culture. https://x-culture.org

I want to thank all DEC members for their hard work, and NADEC is pleased to be able to offer this discounted rate for all our DEC members.

Sincerely, Jonathan Szucs, NADEC Chair, Mid-Atlantic Representative
General Manager, Advanced Superabrasives, Inc.

Why Trade DNA?
At some moment in your life you had an opportunity to shift your career path towards the global marketplace. Why? How did this happen? Your answer will be different from mine and different from your friends and colleagues.

I am privileged to have taught university students International Marketing and Global Business Development for several years. The question was posed at the beginning of each semester, “What interests you about the international marketplace?” and “Why did you choose to join the class?” The #1 response was always the same from semester to semester: “TRAVEL”.

Since the earliest times people have chosen to travel away from their origin to the next village, then to the next region and, over time, the world.

How did they continue their journeys? They exchanged this-for-that & that-for-this in a perpetual cycle of travel supported by business. We seemingly have an inherent need to move, to see, to explore and to “trade”. That is Trade DNA.
As a teenager I traveled to Europe for several weeks the summer before entering university. This was my first time traveling outside the USA experiencing the world and what it had to offer: beautiful new places, their people and culture. I began to re-think my future. How could I match up my upcoming university experience with my new adventure of seeing the world? My original plan was quickly scrapped and my academic journey was redirected towards a path which would lead me to a global career.

By the way, what is your story? How did you become interested in the global marketplace? Let us know by emailing me: TradeDNA@usaexporter.org and placing
“My Trade DNA Story” in the subject line.
Trade DNA seeks to encourage students from Middle School through University to consider a career in global trade. Career paths can easily be combined with other academic paths from business to biology while supporting a trajectory of going global and improving the world through business.
See the new Trade DNA” page/tab on the NADEC website and join our initiative to encourage the next generation towards the most exciting career path ever!

UK seeks aerospace deals in new trade pact with Washington state
AJOT, Ellen Milligan | September 26, 2023

The UK will sign a trade pact with Washington state aimed at facilitating aerospace deals with the US, as it seeks to bolster its economic ties in the absence of broader free-trade discussions with President Joe Biden.

The memorandum of understanding, the sixth such pact with a US state, is focused on forging closer ties between the two countries’ aviation sectors. Washington state is the birthplace of US aerospace giant Boeing Co.

The framework will enable UK and US businesses to work together more seamlessly, Nusrat Ghani, the UK minister for industry, told Bloomberg News in an interview. Ghani touted the collective impact of the mini trade pacts.

“The combined GDP of the six states will be over £2 trillion, the equivalent of the GDP in France,” she said.

Ghani will sign the agreement alongside Washington state Governor Jay Inslee at an event in Seattle late Monday in the US.

The UK has sought closer commercial ties with individual states with a broader US free-trade deal, touted as a benefit of leaving the European Union, still far off. The country has signed agreements with Indiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma and Utah, and hopes to sign agreements with Florida, Texas and California.

Biden’s trade chief backs WTO reform agenda — with
a warning
AJOT, Bryce Baschuk, September 25, 2023

President Joe Biden’s top trade official reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to reforming the World Trade Organization in a speech aimed at blunting criticism that the US is slow-rolling efforts to update the trade body’s decades-old rulebook.

In remarks to the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington Friday, Trade Representative Katherine Tai said she and her US colleagues are “rolling up our sleeves” to advance a comprehensive reform agenda that will improve transparency, bolster the WTO’s negotiating function, and repair its dispute-settlement system.

Nevertheless, Tai warned that the Biden administration is not interested in “restoring” the WTO appellate body — a sort of supreme court for trade that ceased functioning in 2020 after former President Donald Trump blocked all new appointments to the seven-member panel.

“The goal here is not restoring the appellate body or going back to the way things used to be,” Tai said. “It is about providing confidence that the system is fair. And revitalizing the agency of members to settle their disputes.”
