Sign Up Growers for the
Iowa Seed Corn Cover Crops Initiative
The Iowa Seed Corn Cover Crop Initiative provides financial incentives for planting cover crops on seed corn production acres. Eight seed companies, representing the vast majority of seed corn production in Iowa, provide cost share, technical assistance, and outreach dedicated to seed corn growers. Financial incentives available to seed corn growers are $15 per acre for winter-hardy and $10 per acre for winterkill cover crops. An additional $5 per acre incentive is available for first-time cover crop users. Growers can access the sign-up form online at Iowa Seed Corn Cover Crops Initiative | Grower Resources (sustainableseedcorn.org).

The Iowa Seed Corn Cover Crops Initiative focuses on ways to help increase adoption of cover crops specifically within seed corn production. Seed corn provides earlier harvest and better timing opportunities for establishing cover crops in the late summer and early fall after harvest. Cost share applications for planting cover crops on seed corn acres are being accepted.

New Cover Crop Survey Data
Challenges Assumptions
A national survey finds incentive payments boost cover crops, while 9 in 10 farmers intend to stick with cover crops after payments end. These findings were among many conclusions drawn in a report, issued jointly by the USDA-NIFA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program, Conservation Technology Information Center (CTIC), and the American Seed Trade Association (ASTA), based on insights from nearly 800 farmers in 49 states. For the full survey report and additional resources on cover crops, visit www.ctic.org/data/Cover_Crops_Research_and_Demonstration_Cover_Crop_Survey or www.sare.org/covercropsurvey.
To locate cover crop seed dealers in your area, visit ASTA's cover crop seed map.
Safe Handling of Treated Seed During Harvest
As harvest begins across the country, the Iowa Seed Association reminds farmers and grain handlers to take the proper steps to ensure treated seed does not enter the grain supply. It’s always important to completely remove, and properly dispose of, all treated seed from containers and equipment used to handle harvested grain. Treated seeds offer an economical and sustainable way to boost food security by helping crops thrive, maximizing yield potential. Good stewardship means keeping them out of grain channels.
