A Note From the Superintendent

It is hard to believe that we are through the first quarter of the school year. We have so many things to celebrate and our newsletters act to highlight some of these areas.

This past August the Linn-Mar Board of Directors passed a new Strategic Plan. We are in the early stages of implementation and are excited to bring this vision to reality. For more information on the Plan, please visit our website or watch video highlights from the latest Lion Learning Session which focused on it.

Winter weather is just around the corner. Please visit our School Cancelation and Delay Procedures page for guidelines that we follow when school is delayed, canceled, or released early. This page also has links to our notification procedures and general guidelines that we follow regarding Heat, Cold, and Snow events.

We are so lucky to have such a great school community Thank you for all that you do to support our schools!

Sincerely,

Amy Kortemeyer

Winter is Coming!

Winter Weather is just around the corner and Linn-Mar is ready! Please remember to update your contact information in Powerschool to receive the notifications Contact your school office for assistance if needed. Decisions will be made by 5:30 a.m., when possible, for late starts and cancelations.

Cold:

If the Actual temperature is -15 or colder, school will be delayed, or canceled.

If the National Weather Service issues a wind chill advisory that would be in effect at the start of the school day, there may be a two-hour delay.

  • A wind chill advisory means that wind chill values are expected to fall to between -20° and -29° F.

If the National Weather Service issues a wind chill warning that would be in effect at the start of the school day, there will be a two-hour delay.

  • A wind chill warning means the wind chill values are expected to fall to -30°F or lower.

If the wind chill warning is in effect beyond 11:00 AM, classes will be canceled.

Heat (and Cold):

The District has an energy-saving agreement with Alliant Energy to shut down power on the main campus should temperatures become too extreme (cold or hot). Buildings that would be directly affected by a power shutdown: Linn-Mar High School, Excelsior Middle School, Indian Creek Elementary, and the Learning Resource Center.

Snow:

School will be canceled if heavy snow and/or icy conditions make it exceedingly hazardous or impossible for school buses to travel their routes and/or for employees and students to report to school safely. Decisions and notifications will be made by 5:30 a.m. on the morning of a cancellation. As a general practice, all activities are canceled unless otherwise noted.

These general guidelines are subject to change at the Superintendent’s discretion. Each weather situation will be assessed independently.

Celebrating America Reads Day!

Nearly 500 volunteers read to PreK-6th grade students throughout the Linn-Mar district for America Reads Day! Volunteers included high school and college students, parents, grandparents, community leaders, district board members, retired and current staff. The day’s tagline, “Reading is Contagious” rang true as favorite books were shared all day and a precious story of a little one going home that evening who convinced her family to spend the whole evening together, READING!

Thanks to the guest readers and all the volunteers that made the event a complete success!

Linn-Mar Celebrates 75 Years!

Historic Highlights:

Wilkins Elementary

Another chapter of our great district!

Wilkins Elementary was the first Linn-Mar building to be located off the central campus. It was constructed on five and one-third acres of land purchased for $11,256 from Lloyd and Mildred Taube. At the same time, the city of Marion purchased eight acres for a neighborhood park on the edge of town, now known as Taube Park.

Wilkins Elementary was dedicated on March 5th, 1967. It is named after Clifford Wilkins who served as District Principal from 1950 to 1959 and District Superintendent from 1959 to 1964.
