CSU Pueblo Cyber Security Program garners National Science Foundation funding and creates pathways for students

The Center for Cyber Security Education and Research (CCSER) is now in the fourth year of its five-year $2.5 million Project PUENTE (Partnerships in Undergraduate Education for New and Transferring Estudiantes) National Science Foundation (NSF) grant. The project is funded by the NSF as an initiative to support Hispanic Serving Institutions create pathways for underrepresented minority student groups and females in the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Project PUENTE, which is Spanish for “bridge,” seeks to ease the transition from a two-year to a four-year institution and incorporate advanced coursework to help students adjust from lower-division to upper-division classes.

Project PUENTE will focus on the technology aspect of STEM with plans to use cyber security as a gateway to attract and retain students pursuing a bachelor’s degree and careers in STEM. To date, the NSF-STEM-HSI grant project has provided scholarships and stipends for over 500 students throughout Southern Colorado to participate in the National Cyber League (NCL) cyber games. Students from local middle and high schools, as well as community colleges, have joined CSU Pueblo students to compete in the NCL games.

NEW: CTLL's Rachel Zimmerman presents: Trauma-Aware Approaches for Educator Wellbeing

On behalf of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Leadership

At this point in the semester, faculty often need

support more than they need new strategies for

teaching. This online session focuses on practices that

help educators and, in turn, create a trauma-aware

and supportive atmosphere for students. I will assist

you in developing your Scope of Practice, a list of tasks

that are part of your job and those that are outside of

your responsibility. We will discuss when and how to

refer students to support services, so that you are not

carrying the weight of student support alone.

Celebrate the Life of Professor Janet Nichols

On behalf of Operations & Advancement

In September 2023, CSU Pueblo lost a stalwart member of our community. Professor Janet Nichols (Mathematics) passed away at her home in Canon City, surrounded in love with her children, Gina and Dan, after a turbulent battle with metastatic pancreatic cancer.

CSU Pueblo President, Timothy Mottet, shared the following: “With the passing of Dr. Janet Nichols, we have lost a great friend, colleague, and incredible educator. Across four decades, Dr. Nichols helped students understand and appreciate mathematics and life. Janet has been the constant on a campus full of change. She kept us grounded, and I know it’s going to take some time to find our footing again.”

A celebration of life will be held on “Math Day,” November 16, 2023, at CSU Pueblo’s Hoag Hall from 3:30-4:30pm, with a reception in the Hoag Hall lobby to follow from 4:30-5:30pm.

Losing any member of the Pack is always difficult. If you need help working through this time, the Wolfpack Counseling Center is available for students and staff, both on-site and online, Monday - Friday 8 am – 5 pm Please feel free to contact them at 719.549.2838 if you have any questions or want to set up an appointment. If you are in crisis, please reach out to Colorado Crisis Services at 1.844.493.8255.
