Peak Fall Foliage In the Palisades

Autumn is sweeping its way down the Hudson, and the show of colorful leaves in the Palisades region will be in full force by this weekend. You can expect parks like Minnewaska and Bear Mountain to be full of leaf peepers, so peak colors are the perfect opportunity to visit the lesser known parks in our region.

The newest addition to the Palisades Parks is Sojourner Truth State Park in Kingston. The trails are easy to moderate and wind through bright foliage, the last of the season’s wildflowers, and Hudson river views. Or for an outing closer to the City, climbing Hook Mountain or strolling along Nyack Beach are some of the best-kept secrets in the lower Hudson Valley. We’ll see you out there!

Boo at the Zoo

Trailside Museums & Zoo at Bear Mountain State Park will hold their annual Boo at Zoo event on Saturday, October 28th from 10:30am-3:00pm. Arrive at the bear den at 10:30am to make Halloween-themed animal enrichment, which will be followed by a variety of family friendly activities. Costumes are encouraged!

"Parkee Spotlight": A Fond Farewell to MaryLynne Malone

Speaking of seasonal changes, an impactful member of the Palisades Parks staff is leaving her post after more than 30 years. MaryLynne Malone runs the Regional Nature Museums in Harriman State Park, serving thousands of campers and visitors to Harriman State Park each summer. During her three decades of service she created countless fun and engaging lessons about local wildlife and geology. She also dedicated her time to mentoring the next generation of environmental educators.

We visited MaryLynne at Kannawauke Nature Museum just before she welcomed a group of campers from Camp Homeward Bound. Her energetic persona and experience shone brightly as she demonstrated feeding a painted turtle and challenged the campers with trivia. The Palisades region has been lucky to have MaryLynne as a coordinator, creative force, and educator. We wish her well in her next ventures!
