IFMA Member Spotlight

Meet Lawson S. Beard!

Tech II Specialist, JLL, META

How did you get into Facility Management?

I had been working as a maintenance supervisor since 2009. I worked for a medium size property management company with a great group of people who always encouraged my growth.

June 2018 I met with enrollment coaches In the UW continuing education program. December 2018 I wrote to Fawn Wilson of the IFMA Greater Seattle Chapter, by Summer of 2019 I was enrolled in the UW Facility Management and Sustainability Program headed up by Robert Blakey. We started class in fall of 2019. The certificate class was great and I highly recommend it. We didn’t let Covid-19 stop us. By June of 2020 we were graduating. I was fortunate to be picked up by JLL and after getting my feet wet on the UHG contract. I am now on the META contract and could not be happier. So many people to thank. I was a Class A Driver when the 2008-2009 recession started. My landlord asked me if I wanted to work around the building in Downtown Seattle. It was a 48 unit apartment complex. I accepted as I already had experience in the trades from being a Union Laborer Local 440 and US. Army.

How do you benefit from the IFMA and Seattle Chapter?

Credentials play a significant role in demonstrating your knowledge and abilities. This will be my first credential under the IFMA banner. Networking will be my priority. There are so many people that have helped me along the way.  So many to name in all the trades. And now that I will have the opportunity to demonstrate my office management SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE, I was an office manager, dispatcher and restaurant manager and medical coordinator prior to settling into a career in Property Management. I am really excited about my future.

Any advice for new members?

Don’t quit! You can do this. It might take a while, maybe longer than you had originally anticipated. But every obstacle can be overcome. Go for it. I have never been more secure in myself and optimistic about my future.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Fishing, fishing, rivers, lakes, oceans anywhere there a body of water.

IFMA Seattle President, Adam Thordarson, and Vice President of Education, Melanie Danuser, will be speaking at the event on Friday, September 29th at 9:15am. The session, “Cutting out the Noise: How to Turn Environmental Policy into Assets for Your Facility” will talk about how facilities departments are under increasing financial pressure due to dynamic market conditions, and also find themselves responsible in some capacity for new and more stringent building performance standards and ESG guidelines. In this presentation, Adam and Melanie will discuss how environmental policy and initiatives at the state and national level affect facility managers on the ground. Outcomes for this presentation include specific guidelines on how to make a useful, clear, and to the point business use case for capital upgrades and answers the question: “What does my CFO want to see and how do I put it in front of them to get to best possible results?”

Get Free Support to Meet the WA Clean Buildings Law!

The City of Seattle is offering a no-cost program to support building owners and operators to meet the WA State Clean Buildings Performance Standard and to reduce emissions. Under this law, commercial buildings that are 50,000 square feet or larger will need to comply with energy targets and submit energy management documentation. OSE encourages participation from representatives of buildings that serve or are in frontline communities, like community organizations, shelters, community centers, worship facilities, health centers, nursing homes, and more!

Facilities Planning And Design - An Introduction For Facility Planners, Facility Project Managers And Facility Managers

by Jonathan Khin Ming Lian

This book focuses on the ten essentials of facilities planning and design. It covers topics such as strategic planning, space standards, architectural programming, site selection, master planning, environmental planning, capital planning, workplace planning and design, and space management. Examples will be drawn from the planning and design of airports and universities which are large organisations with extensive campuses and are asset heavy in terms of buildings.

By learning about the planning and design processes as it relates to facilities, students and facility professionals will be able to align facilities planning and design with the organisation's strategic priorities, manage design consultants by understanding the planning and design process, manage the planning and design of spaces at different scales, and manage the use of existing space effectively. The book is designed such that its chapters may be read either sequentially or as individual standalone references or resources for specific aspects of facility planning, management and design.
