Albuquerque Tennis Club, 2901 Indian School Rd NE

(Northeast corner of Indian School and Girard)

Everyone (members and friends, young and old) is invited to join St. Mark's students, teachers, and families for our "back to school" pool party and potluck supper.  Arrive any time after 6:00 p.m. and sign in at the front desk (we'll have the pool all to ourselves from 6:30-8:30). There is a big pool, a baby pool, and lots of tables and chairs for lounging around as you enjoy food and fellowship.

Please bring a "main dish salad", dessert, and/or drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) to share. St. Mark's will provide the cups, plates & napkins. Around 8PM we'll begin to pack up and at ~8:15 we'll gather around the pool and close the evening by praying compline together. Join us!

Community Conversation: Spirituality and the 12 Steps

Breathing Under Water: Spirituality and the 12 Steps

A Community Introduction to Richard Rohr's book & concepts

Facilitators: Cole McLaren & Thomas Russell

Sunday, September 3rd, 11:15 a.m. in the Library

"We are all addicted in some way. When we learn to identify our addiction, embrace our brokenness, and surrender to God, we begin to bring healing to ourselves and our world." In his book, Breathing Under Water: Spirituality & the Twelve Steps, Richard Rohr shows how the gospel principles in the Twelve Steps can free anyone from any addiction—from an obvious dependence on alcohol or drugs to the more common but less visible addiction that we all have to sin.

How does addiction (to ideas, beliefs, habits, toxic relationships, and/or substances) constrain our freedom and impede our flourishing? How might the Gospel, the 12 Steps, and/or Contemplative Prayer and Practice help us all experience more freedom and the fullness of life that God desires for us? Join St. Mark's members Thomas Russell and Cole McLaren for a community conversation as we begin to explore these important questions together. If you are interested in being part of this conversation, but can't join the gathering on September 3rd, please contact Thom (via email here) or Cole (via email here).

Celebration: Karen McDaniel's Lifetime of Altar Guild Service

Karen McDaniel has spent much of her life dutifully serving on the Altar Guild of St. Mark's. After worship on September 17th, let's celebrate Karen's exemplary service by bringing a salad to share (all types of salads are welcome!), as well as bringing cards or notes of gratitude to give to her. There will be celebratory cake and some storytelling, as well.

Save the Date: Building Renewal Committee - Meet the Architect!

Formation: Sign Up for Inquirers' Class

Sundays 11:15-12:15

Beginning: September 10 – November 19 (8 Sessions)

Location: St. Mark’s Library

Facilitators: Fr. Christopher McLaren, Ty Camp, and Harrison Higgins

Join us to learn more about the Episcopal Church and the practices that make for a vital faith journey. We will enjoy brief videos from The Episcopal Church’s series on The Way of Love, inspired by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry. Classes will consist of video, teaching, discussion and reflection. This class is for anyone who wants to learn more about the Episcopal Church, deepen their connection to the community of St. Mark’s, refresh their faith and spiritual practices, or prepare to become a member through baptism, confirmation, or reception.

Please let us know you're coming by signing up on the sign-up sheet on the table in the hallway going toward the Parish Hall, or by emailing Fr. Christopher via email here.

Outreach: Food Pantry Volunteer Opportunity

Our friends at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in the North Valley need help.

Their food pantry, Casa San Miguel, is experiencing nearly double the number of families seeking assistance. While the food pantry can always use money and food donations, they really need people to come help out.

The times are Mondays and Tuesdays, 6:30 – 10:00 on both days. You can work a portion of those times. While there is some lifting (40-pound boxes) involved, there are other jobs which do not require too much manual labor.

Please contact Deacon David (via email here) for more information and to sign up.

Outreach: Volunteer for Thanksgiving Feast of Hope

cornucopia-flowers.jpg

There are exciting outreach opportunities this Thanksgiving!

St. Mark’s is teaming up with La Mesa Presbyterian Church to feed those in need at La Mesa’s annual Feast of Hope Thanksgiving Day dinner.

Here are some opportunities to help:

  • Wednesday, Nov 22 – help with set up and food prep at La Mesa.
  • Thursday, Nov 23 (Thanksgiving Day) – early set up, mid-day food service, meal delivery to homes, late day clean up at La Mesa
  • Now – donate money for food and supplies.

These are great ways to express our gratitude for the abundance of gifts we receive by giving our time and talents to help create a wonderful Thanksgiving for others. Please see Deacon David for more information via email here.

Community Conversation: Safe Church Follow Up

yellow_closeup_flower.jpg

Sunday, September 17th 5pm in Stoney Chapel

In August we held a series of community conversations at St. Mark's around experiencing, responding to, and preventing abuse. These are important conversations, and we are profoundly grateful for the courage and care of all the members of St. Mark's who participated. These are also difficult conversations, and we want to create space for anyone who might need some follow up care, conversation, prayer, or support following their participation in these conversations.

Please feel free to join us in holding safe space for follow-up care and connection in Stoney Chapel on Sunday, September 17th from 5-6pm. And feel free to reach out to Mother Sylvia (email here), Deacon David (email here), or Fr. Christopher (email here) for one-on-one care, conversation, prayer, or support at any time.
