Post-Liver Transplant Recurrence of PSC:
A Conversation with Dr. Palak Trivedi
In episode 39 of the Living with PSC Podcast, Host Niall McKay has an in-depth conversation with Dr. Palak Trivedi, BSc (hons), MBBS, MRCP Gastro (UK), PhD, Associate Professor, and Honorary Consultant Hepatologist, Birmingham University, UK. They discuss the recurrence of PSC in people who have received a liver transplant.
"PSC has certain features of it which tell us it's an immune-mediated, and some people say autoimmune, disease. We are not changing the immune system when we do a liver transplant. We're changing part of it, because the liver has lots of immune cells, but not the immune system in the whole body, and that's why we believe that people with autoimmune liver diseases, including PSC, (may) develop recurrence," says Dr. Trivedi.

In this episode, McKay and Dr. Trivedi also discuss the differences between PSC and PBC, clinical trials searching for treatments and a cure, studies exploring the cause of PSC, and how IBD, particularly ulcerative colitis, may reduce the risk of post-transplant recurrence.
"In retrospective studies, our group and others around the world have found that people who have colitis and have had their large bowel removed (and have kept their stoma), lower their risk of developing recurrence of PSC."
Each month, this podcast explores the latest research and knowledge about PSC. From patient stories to the latest research updates from PSC experts to collaborations that are necessary to find better treatments and a cure, this podcast has it all!

First-Ever PSC Partners Scientific Working Group Gathering at
2023 PSC Partners Annual Conference
PSC Partners, in collaboration with the Resnek Family Foundation, is excited to announce a first-ever in-person gathering of the International Collaborative Research Network (ICRNetwork) Scientific Working Group prior to the 2023 PSC Partners Annual Patient and Caregiver Conference. Key stakeholders from the U.S., Canada, and Europe are gathering to collaborate, share information, and bring us closer to our goal of finding treatments and a cure for PSC. The aim is to identify gaps in current PSC research and collaboratively create strategies to pursue going forward.
The group will be discussing four main areas of interest:
1. Clinical Trials for PSC: What are the key biomarkers and endpoints?
2. Gut-Liver Axis: How do we make sense of the association with IBD?
3. Diagnosis/Prognostic Biomarkers: What are the next steps towards early diagnosis and improved understanding of prognosis?
4. Unraveling the Pathophysiology of PSC: What tools and strategies do we need?
Attendance is strictly limited to invited members of the Scientific Working Group and patient representatives from the PSC Partners Board of Directors and staff. This meeting is chaired by Joshua Korzenik, MD, Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Christopher Bowlus, MD, University of California, Davis.
Experts from the Scientific Working Group will also be presenting at the 2023 PSC Partners Annual Patient and Caregiver Conference. Many of these presentations will be recorded and available on our website and YouTube Channel following the Conference.

Tips and Tricks for the 2023 PSC Partners Annual Conference
If you're attending the Conference, these tips are for you!
If you registered for our upcoming 2023 PSC Partners Patient and Caregiver Conference, we're excited to see you soon. Below are a few reminders to ensure you get the most out of this important weekend.
Do I need to download an app before the Conference? Yes -- Conference information, including the agenda, will be on the Cvent app this year. If you have a smartphone, visit the app store, and download the Cvent app. From there, you will be able to access the PSC Partners Conference page. If you don't have a smartphone, don't worry. We can get you information when you visit us at the registration desk when you check in. While the Cvent app is fairly easy to navigate, a training video will be available soon.
Is there a dress code? No -- There is no set dress code for the Conference. Most attendees wear jeans or slacks. Because conditions can vary due to air conditioning, a sweater or sweatshirt is strongly advised. Meals will be outside, and it will be warm. So, it's important to prepare for that, as well.
What is the theme for the Saturday Night Gala? Western -- This fun social event is always a highlight of the Conference. While costumes are not required, they are highly encouraged. Some folks choose to stay lowkey when choosing an outfit while others go all out! Your chosen attire is completely up to you, but plan to have a rip-roaring fun time! During this year's gala, we will be playing a trivia game and line dancing together. You can participate in any or all activities, or just pull up a chair and watch the fun!
Am I required to wear a mask? -- While we strongly recommend the wearing of masks at our Conference and hope all attendees will mask while indoors to protect immunocompromised people in our community, masks will not be required. We hope you will bring a mask, and masks will be available on site.
Will meals be served outside? Yes -- To further protect immunocompromised people, all group meals will be held outside. There will be some table umbrellas supplied, but know it will be hot and sunny. Bring sunscreen and your favorite sun hat.
Will there be time to socialize with others? Yes -- There are meals and free time set aside to spend time with others. Keep in mind that the Conference venue has some fun amenities, as well, like a:
- swimming pool (open 9 a.m.-7 p.m.)
- fitness center (open 24 hrs)
- movie theater on site
- spa
- food court, and more
Are there special events for teens? Yes -- At the Conference, we offer options specifically for this important group of attendees, including:
- A designated teen lounge (monitored by young adult mentors) where they can rest, relax, chat, recharge, snack, and have fun
- Social events scheduled just for them
- Supportive peer group sessions and mentors
If your teen is reserved or shy, no problem! Teens and young adults who have been to PSC Partners functions in the past will engage with newcomers to ensure everyone feels welcome and included. Additionally, if teens are interested in any of the educational sessions, they are welcome to attend. Remember that Conference attendees must be aged 13 and over.
What is the age limit for attendees? 13 years old -- Remember that, due to the sensitive subject matter at the Conference, attendees must be aged 13 and over. There are no exceptions, including babies. Thanks for understanding.
Are walk-in registrations allowed? No -- Unfortunately, if you are not registered for the Conference, it is too late to sign up, and no walk-in registrations will be accepted. Many of the sessions will be available on our website and YouTube channel following the Conference, and we will announce the date and location of the 2024 Conference as soon as it's confirmed to ensure you have plenty of time to register!
See you soon!

Sandi Pearlman Gets Real About the
PSC Partners Conference
"One look at the conference agenda will tell you that PSC is no laughing matter. Our topics range the scope from genetics to MELD, CCA to Urso, transplant and depression and back and forth and everywhere in between. But lest you feel as though the conference is just about the tough and cold, hard facts of having an incurable illness, let me let you in on another secret. PSC Partners conferences are also notorious for their laughter and fun.
You're in a room where everyone is gathered together for the same thing, to become better informed about this disease that has brought us all to this place in time and to find a way to defeat it. We're not powerless. We're powerful. We don't need liquid courage or fortifying. We're enough. No matter how weak we sometimes feel in regular life, here, together, we're strong."
Folks who have been in the PSC Partners community remember Sandi Pearlman as a bright, positive light. Her insight, humor, and supportive presence were a real gift to those who knew her.
