Grace Notes

Friday Devotional:

Psalm 104:24-34, 35b

If a wasp or hornet comes into a beehive, the worker bees flap their wings to get the hive up to 114.8 degrees Fahrenheit. That exact temperature is hot enough to kill the intruder but just shy of the temperature at which the bees would also die. That the worker bees have this built-in knowledge of just how hot to heat the hive is fascinating to me. In this way and many others, bees display the incredible wisdom and intricacy present in the natural world. Today's psalm celebrates the world God made, in all its variety and beauty. Many feel a sense of connection to God in nature that is unparalleled in other places, which speaks to the sacredness present in creation.

Yet we often forget that the diversity present in our fellow humans is also part of the wisdom of creation celebrated in the Psalms. Today we are invited to praise God for the wisdom and beauty present in all aspects of God's creation and to delight in it.

Lord, your created world is filled with wonder. Help us respect and care for it well. Amen.
