CBF Offering for Global Missions

The WMU invites you to contribute to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF) Offering for Global Missions. One hundred percent of these funds support the long-term presence (salary, benefits, and housing) of CBF field personnel in the US and around the world. There are currently 48 field personnel in 17 countries, enabling them to bear witness to Jesus Christ, cultivate beloved community, and seek transformational development. There are yellow envelopes in your box of offering envelopes for this fund; however, we do not have envelopes for the pews. Please simply mark your gifts payable to Vinton Baptist and notate "CBF Offering for Global Missions." Our church goal is $2,200.

Four on the 4th

If you want to support Boys & Girls Club through their annual Four on the 4th run/walk this Independence Day, please click here for all the details and to sign up! Also, we need some folks on July 3rd to prepare watermelon for this event; if you can help, please call the church office at 540-343-7685.

Christian sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Bonnie Short Hartsel, who passed away June 13th; to Jack Kendrick and family in the death of his wife, Velma, on June 14th; to Esta & Etta Wolfe and daughter Penny in the death of Penny's husband, Ron Dellis, on June 14th; to Valerie & Matthew Thomas and family in the death of her grandmother, Betty Williams; to the family and friends of Chris Teague Chattin Moore, who passed away June 16th; and to the family and friends of Jimmy Burke, who passed away June 17th.

Congratulations to the Lovelace Scholarship

& Stovall-Page Scholarship Recipients!

Elizabeth (Liz) Dixon and Claire Glover are the 2024 recipients of the Dr. Charlie J. (Jay) Lovelace, III Memorial College Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 each. They are also the 2024 recipients of the Stovall-Page Scholarship in the amount of $500 each. Liz and Claire were both recognized as recipients of these scholarships at William Byrd High School April 25th, as well as in our graduate recognition service May 19th. Liz will attend Virginia Tech to pursue a degree in Engineering. Claire will attend University of Virginia to study Kinesiology.

We honor Liz and Claire for their academic achievements and for their service to their school, community, church, and families. Our warmest congratulations on a job well done!

Keystone Paper Drive

The annual Keystone Paper Drive, which is sponsored by the JOY Seniors, will run the entire month of July. Please consider donating paper goods such as paper towels, toilet paper, plates, bowls, napkins, etc. Collection boxes will be located in the Welcome Center and the lobby of the New Ministries Building beginning Sunday, June 30th.

Community Assistance Fund

The Community Assistance Fund is designed to assist non-members in the greater Roanoke area with rent/mortgage, utilities, heating fuel, medical bills, and similar expenses that they are having trouble paying. This fund is sustained entirely by donations; it is not a budgeted item. When we have funds, we are able to fulfill requests. When the account is depleted, we simply turn individuals/families away. Unfortunately, we have had to turn a number of people away over the past couple of months, as we only have $72.12 in that fund. We are thankful for those who have chosen to give to Community Assistance in the past. If you are interested in giving now, please make payment (by check, cash, or online) to VBC and notate that it is for the "Community Assistance Fund." Thank you!

Bible Reading Plan

Today is the first day of reading in Luke, and this gospel promises to be engaging. Fee & Stuart state, "If Mark is one of those who cannot tell a story badly, Luke is the one who can tell it to perfection." They explain that Luke has traditionally been known as the author of this gospel and that he is "the only Gentile author in the Bible." They also emphasize the continuity between the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts; they are to be understood as two parts of a whole. There is no consensus on the exact date of Luke's gospel; it could be sometime before 64 A.D. or possibly after 70 A.D.

Following is a brief summary from Fee & Stuart of Luke's contributions to the New Testament: "Luke's primary concern (in both parts) is with the story of salvation - God's salvation of 'Israel,' with its promised inclusion of the Gentiles. Salvation for Luke means God's acceptance and forgiveness of sinners, which, picking up an Old Testament theme, is especially expressed as 'good news to the poor' ... - all those who have been marginalized by society at large and especially by the religious power brokers. They are the 'lost' (19:10) and include wealthy tax collectors (19:1-9), 'the [economically] poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind' (14:13; cf. 16:19-31), a Samaritan (17:11-19; cf. 10:25-37), and women (7:36-50 ...). Be looking for these as you read. It also includes the Gentiles, but that dimension of the story is reserved for Acts. Thus in part 1 {Luke} the universalizing of salvation is vertical, covering every strata of society within Israel; in part 2 {Acts} it is horizontal, focusing especially on the Gentiles and the march of the gospel from Jerusalem to Rome."

Fee & Stuart also note that both Isaiah and Psalms are particularly important in the context of Luke's writing and that he emphasizes both the temple and the Holy Spirit. I hope you're enjoying the New Testament so far; I love hearing your feedback!

Vinton Baptist Church,

Thank you all so much for the cards, visits, prayers, and support during our mother's recent illness and passing. She loved her church and was grateful to be part of such a loving church family.
