Is your teen "acting like a teen"? Volunteering this summer is a great way to help them "get out of themselves" and experience the good feeling that comes from helping others. YouthSERVE is dedicated to connecting youth, ages 11-17, with rewarding volunteer projects across Santa Cruz County. "We connect local youth who have a passion to help those in need with meaningful opportunities to do so."

"If These Walls Could Talk"
Castro Adobe Open House at Rancho San Andres
| |
"Join us at Castro Adobe’s Open House, Rancho San Andres, on Saturday, June 15, 10:30am-3pm to celebrate State Parks Week.
The two-story Castro Adobe, constructed in 1849-50 and damaged in the 1989 earthquake, was restored through a special collaboration between California State Parks, Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks and hundreds of community members. Following restoration of the building in 2022, fabrication and installation of the exhibits is now complete.
The goal of the Castro Adobe State Historic Park exhibits is to imagine “If These Walls Could Talk” and what would they say to a visitor who comes to learn about the historic adobe and life in a Mexican rancho. The exhibits tell the varied history of the site and the walls tell you the story with painted text and projected multimedia displays, including a video of traditional Fandango dancing, featuring musicians and dancers in historically accurate costumes.
Holy cow! As summer approaches it’s time for the matanza! The annual slaughter of cattle took place in the summer and was extremely important in Alta California. Learn about the importance of the vacas in Alta California and how cows allowed the Castros to build their dream home we call the Castro Adobe.
Niños, learn how to make a candle! Listen to live music and enjoy our recently installed interpretive displays.
Stroll through the Thomas Church designed garden while listening to live music by the Poet Laureate of Watsonville, Bob Gomez accompanied by his talented wife Denise. Enjoy our many new interpretive displays showcasing the Castro family, vaquero culture, fandango dancing and bear and bull fights that were used to celebrate festive events.

Kindness 101
"Our end of the year Kindness 101 project involved painting rocks and adding messages such as “be kind”, “kindness rocks”, and Meryl’s famous line “Stay kind.” Students placed one rock on the school playground for other students to find, and then took five rocks home to spread kindness around their neighborhood. Thank you Steve Hartman for the inspiring videos and stories you share. Until next school year, stay kind."
