Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Commencement season always brings me fond memories, including remembering the pride I felt in watching my own children complete their degrees to take the next steps in their lives.
It is the same today for all of us, as we rush to complete the final quarter of the year and usher our Arts and Humanities students along their own paths. I am eager to take the stage with you at this year’s all-campus ceremony, as we celebrate their successes and welcome our new alumni.
The end of the academic year brings reflection in other areas, too. We have had our own successes: professional recognition for our colleagues, new research and publications, dedication toward our graduate students and undergraduate students, and a clear commitment from our staff that we are all engaged and working toward the common good.
When I was invited by the Emeriti Association Chronicles to write what I felt about the state of the arts at UC San Diego, I was struck by two things: the state of the arts should go hand-in-hand with the state of the humanities — both are receiving the respect we’ve long deserved, while always striving for more — and there simply isn’t enough space to express all there is to say.
So I will be clear here. Each day, I am honored to work alongside every one of you, staff and faculty alike. We have achieved great things. And we have more greatness ahead.
With gratitude,
Dean Cristina Della Coletta
