Welcome to the Fall 2023 Semester!
The semester officially begins Saturday, August 19. If you are in an online class, make sure to begin checking your Canvas Saturday for communications from your professors. If you have an in-person class, you should plan to attend your class on the day and time found on your schedule. Make sure to check the location of your in-person class to ensure you go to the right campus.
Tip: Don’t see your class on Canvas? To view unpublished classes, click on the “Courses” icon and select “All Courses” to see everything you are currently enrolled in.

Don’t Miss out on Great Fall Classes | |
We know you’re already enrolled for fall, but have you considered taking one more class if you are attending part-time? Studies show that students enrolled in 6-9 units who take just ONE more course are more likely to stick to college, save money and meet their academic goals sooner (2-3 vs 5 years). Taking an additional class will get you closer to graduation, transfer, and the job you want! Check out the Fall class schedule for a full list of available classes.

⭐️NEW⭐️ MATH 499: Calculus Concepts for Non-STEM Majors is available this fall! Professor Anthony Barcellos will guide you on a journey to understand calculus concepts without getting lost in technicalities. Don't focus on the equations, focus on what makes calculus so important in our lives. This class is CSU transferable. Learn more and enroll today.
| I’m on the Waitlist, Now What? |
The waitlist status of a class changes throughout the enrollment period, so you should regularly monitor your waitlist status. After the semester starts on Saturday, August 19, a permission number is required to be added to a class from the waitlist. If your professor gives you a permission number to add the class, follow these Use Permission Number/Enroll from Waitlist instructions.
Permission numbers are only given to you directly from your professor. If you have questions about whether you will be receiving a permission number, contact your professor to ask how they will be managing their waitlist this semester.
Not sure you will be added from the waitlist, but still need another class this semester to stay on track? Check the list of open classes to see if there is another section of the class you are waitlisted in or if there is another class you want to take.

Know Your Schedule
In-Person:
In-person classes will have a set day, time, and location for your class. This information will be provided on your class schedule in eServices. If your location says TBD, check back closer to the first day of class for updated information.
Online:
Some classes are synchronous and meet online at specific days and times, while others will be asynchronous and are more self-paced. Check your schedule in eServices to make sure you know which of your classes meet up and put it on your calendar so you don't forget!
If no days/times are listed or you see "To be announced," that means your class is asynchronous and there is no scheduled meeting time for that class. Even if you don’t have a set meeting time, plan to check Canvas each week and set aside time to do your regular coursework.

How to Find Your Textbooks
Start by looking up your textbooks by course section on the bookstore website. Free store pickup is available at checkout or you can pay to have your textbooks shipped to your house. If you’d like to shop in-person, check the website for their hours of operation.
If you ship your items, they will typically arrive within 4-7 days. Expedited shipping is also available for an additional cost.

Parking Update
Parking permits will be required for the Fall 2023 semester. Los Rios was able to temporarily waive parking fees during the pandemic using federal relief funding, however, those funds are no longer available. All parking fees are used to support parking infrastructure, maintenance, and services.
It is recommended that you purchase your parking permit online via eServices in advance, so that you receive it in the mail before the fall semester starts on August 19. Consider it one more thing to cross off your back-to-school to-do list!

Tech Tips to Get You Started |
Canvas: Online and in-person classes both use the Canvas learning system. If you are new to Canvas, check out our Los Rios Canvas "how to" videos to get started or visit the Canvas Getting Started Guide.
Apps and Software for Students: Check out the Technology Resources webpage for instructions on how to download software like Microsoft and SacRT’s Zip Pass, plus find information about low-cost or free internet and wi-fi. Also check out CollegeBuys, a program of the Foundation for California Community Colleges, which offers exclusive discounts on educational resources to community college students.
Service Central
Introducing Service Central Students can now request IT services or get support for any IT issue through the online Service Central portal. This includes submitting a request for computer support, software (such as Microsoft Word), hardware (such as a Chromebook), or access to tools and systems (for example, Canvas). In this centralized online system, you’ll be able to track your requests online and ultimately receive faster responses from the IT team.

Tips for Online Classes
- Since online classes don’t require you to meet in person, it can be easy to underestimate how much work they require. Avoid over-scheduling, know the expectations, and actively participate.
- If you have a class that meets at specific days and times on Zoom, make sure to know your schedule and follow it. Log onto Zoom a little early so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.
- Regularly check your email, Canvas online class portal, and communicate with your instructor and use the resources they provide.
- Manage your time wisely and be aware of deadlines. Limit your social media use. Get online tutoring help early on and especially if you’re falling behind.
- Create structure and routine with a regular study space that is comfortable and has minimal distractions.
