"The Automobile is the Art"
An Astro-nomical 1969 Corvette Lands at The Automobile Gallery & Event Center!
A paradox of our existence is that the mile markers of our lives are too often tagged by tragedy. Depending on your vintage, you remember exactly where you were and the very moment you learned President Kennedy had been shot….or the day our country came under attack on 9-11. Those haunting moments are seared into our subconscious. A shining exception is the day Apollo 11 landed on the moon July 20th, 1969. That was a day of total triumph! It happened 53 years ago next Wednesday and I still remember it like it was four hours ago. I was very young, but old enough to realize that something very special had just happened….so special that it brought tears to the eyes of stone-faced CBS Anchorman Walter Cronkite in front of a national television audience.
To illustrate just how astounding and absurd this feat was, take this into account. Apollo 11 lifted off weighing 6.2 million lbs., travelled 240,000 miles in 76 hours and safely placed astronauts Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins on a small patch of another planet while being controlled by NASA computers less sophisticated than a Black and Decker toaster of today.

The Automobile Gallery & Event Center feels a strong connection to July 20th, 1969, and Apollo 11 because 238,900 miles away, give or take a mile marker or two, this Fathom Green L71 Corvette Stingray was touching down on the very same day in St. Louis at GM’s Corvette factory. Before Neil Armstrong could turn a small step for man into a giant leap for mankind, this L71 Corvette took a giant leap of its own. It was born with the legendary Chevy 427 big block V-8 with a rib shaking 435 horsepower. Just 2,722 of the 38,762 Corvettes manufactured in 1969 had the all-powerful L71 package which makes it one of the most coveted Corvettes on earth or, in this case, the galaxy.
The high domed hood, 427 badges and three Holley carbs hiding under the chrome air cleaner defiantly discourage any competitor from challenging this savage at a stop light.

As hard as this classy Corvette was to catch on the street, you can catch it now at The Automobile Gallery & Event Center for a limited time courtesy of owner Craig Barlament. We’re not just excited to have such a distinguished guest we’re “Over the Moon” about this Corvette!
Cowboys Cadillac Rides High at The Great Race!

Congratulations to our friend Len Treeter from Edmonton, Alberta Canada who I featured along with his “Cowboys Cadillac” in the June edition of The Steering Column. When last we left Len, he was about to head to the starting line for the Great Race 2022 in Warwick, Rhode Island and cover 2,300 grueling miles over 9 days on his way to the finish line in Fargo, North Dakota. Len and his navigator Christof Ley from Vienna Austria were the top rookie finishers among 40 rookie teams entered, finishing 36th overall in Len’s 1960 Chevrolet Impala among 134 entries. Congratulations from all of us at The Automobile Gallery & Event Center Len!
