The SEA Northwest Conference (SEA NWC) is approximately one week away! Check it out online: 2023 SEA NW Conference — SEAW. The conference will be Thursday and Friday September 14 and 15 at the Bellevue Hilton.

I have attended the SEA NWC for the past several years. It has always been well worth my time and money to attend since:

  • I feel that I easily recover my registration fee and non-billable time spent attending the Conference because the technical sessions and vendor contacts both provide me with a rapid and optimum answer for many of the design challenges I face in my practice.
  • Networking with other attendees gives me a clearer perspective of engineering practices and permit and construction peculiarities in areas outside Seattle. The SEA NWC includes individuals from Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia, as well as members across Washington state from all four SEAW Chapters.
  • The social events offer yet another opportunity to easily develop personal and professional connections. Thursday evening the Seattle YMG is hosting the SEA NWC social event with sponsorship from CSi. It won’t be quite like the infamous CSi-sponsored events at NCSEA or SEAOC, but it’s the first time CSi has been a sponsor for the SEA NWC and thus promises to be a fun event.

I obtain much more value from an all-day conference than a one-hour webinar or company in-house presentation. As the SEA NWC Technical Program Chair, I assure you the SEA NWC has presentations you will not otherwise be able to experience. Don’t believe me? Check out the Conference Schedule and Presentation Descriptions at 2023 SEA NW Conference — SEAW

I am looking forward to seeing everybody September 14 & 15!

Announcing the NCMA Structural Masonry Design Seminar

YMG Partners with YAF for Annual Summer Cruise

By Evan Jordan, YMG

SEAW YMG hosted their annual Summer Cruise on Friday, August 18th. The cruise lasted for 3 hours as the group of about 40 sailed from South Lake Union to the northwestern portion of Lake Washington and back. For this year’s event, the YMG took a different approach to marketing by partnering with AIA’s younger members organization, the Young Architects Forum (YAF), to also advertise the event. The result was an evening of holistic networking among our design trades within the AEC profession.

In addition, the boat set sail from MOHAI near Lake Union Park, which was the location for this year’s Seattle Design Festival. Attendees were able to interact with the design exhibits en route to the boat; some attendees shared that their firms participated in creating a pop-up for the festival, introducing engaging conversation on the current state and future of Seattle’s built environment.

DeWalt, the sponsor for the summer cruise, took the time to share their new Pure220+ epoxy for post-installed anchors and the DeWalt Concrete Sensor, which allows the user to obtain real-time concrete curing data. Everyone is encouraged to visit their website here and use the Dewalt Design Assist application to specify and design concrete anchor connections.

SEAW YMG thanks DeWalt and Lars Anderson for sponsoring the event, AIA YAF for promoting the event among architects, Kakigori Dessert Café for catering dinner, Captain Jack and his crew (no piracy was committed), and all our members who were able to attend!

The YMG looks to partner with local AEC organizations to host events that allow members to build a broad and valuable professional network. If you liked this event or have an idea for a future collaborative effort, please reach out to seawymg@gmail.com with your questions or comments!

The Summer Cruise attendees are ready to set sail from South Lake Union.

SEAW YMG and ASCE YMF Team-Up to Take on Hunger

By Ryan Thornton, YMG

After a long hiatus due to the pandemic, the SEAW YMG held its first outreach event in more than 3 years. Alongside peers from the ASCE YMF, we partnered with Food Lifeline to help sort and repackage food for our hungry neighbors. The event was a huge success! We made lots of new friends and connections within the SE community while battling over who could sort the most apples. As a group, we were able to sort more than 6,200 pounds of fresh apples that made their way to the local food banks and shelters shortly after.

The SEAW YMG and ASCE YMF volunteers who helped sort and pack 6,200+ pounds of apples!

Food Lifeline is a well-known organization within our community, especially during the month of July when many AEC companies, including the firms we work for, participate in Food Frenzy. Having the opportunity to volunteer at their facility in Sodo enabled me to see into what Food Lifeline does for our community. They go above and beyond, sourcing not only a variety of shelf-stable non-perishable foods, but also fresh foods from many industry partners to ensure our neighbors have ingredients to make delicious and nutritious meals. Another big focus of Food Lifeline that I learned about during this experience is their focus on sourcing diverse foods to give everyone in our community the opportunity to find familiar ingredients. This is a critical step in addressing hunger needs that can often be overlooked, providing everyone access to ingredients that enable them to prepare foods that align with what they are most comfortable with.

Overall, this event was a huge success. Being our first outreach event since the pandemic, we were initially worried about the potential turnout of volunteers. After seeing the enormous turnout of people and the fun we had, we are already planning on holding another event with Food Lifeline before the year’s end! A special shoutout to all the volunteers who showed up, this would not have been possible without your time and generosity!

SEFW 13th Annual Fall Forum to Spotlight Gathering Spaces, SCC Summit

By Angela Gottula

The Structural Engineers Foundation of Washington has had an eventful summer, gearing up for an exciting fall!

First, the Board of Directors hosted its annual retreat in July, coming together to consider Big Picture ideas and opportunities for SEFW. Thank you to Howard Burton, long-time and founding Board member, who hosted the Board in the 50th floor recreational space of Rainier Square!

Second, the website design is finally complete and the new SEFW site will be live in early September! The previous site was designed in Adobe Muse, which was discontinued in 2018. The new site is done in Webflow, a popular customizable and responsive design platform. Check it out by about mid-September and let us know what you think!

Third, we are thrilled to announce plans for the 13th Annual Fall Forum, back at Benaroya Hall this year on Thursday, November 16! “Spaces that Inspire: The Architecture & Engineering of Gathering,” will explore how gathering spaces, particularly convention centers, have changed since the pandemic and continue to contribute to community learning and growth. The event will showcase several iconic convention spaces, including an array of impressive ones in Washington state, and will give special attention to the 1.5-million-square-foot Seattle Convention Center “Summit” expansion.

SEFW’s 13th Annual Fall Forum, “Spaces that Inspire: The Architecture & Engineering of Gathering” will be on November 16 at Benaroya Hall and will discuss iconic convention centers, including the new Seattle Convention Center Summit building. Photo courtesy Magnusson Klemencic Associates; photo credit to Kirk Hostetter.

The speakers include Mark Reddington from LMN Architects and Derek Beaman from Magnusson Klemencic Associates, as well as Jeff Blosser from the Seattle Convention Center. This all-star lineup will deliver an engaging evening reframing the structure of gathering venues! As usual, there will be a pre-function networking reception and firms will be invited to contribute to SEFW and support the SEFW mission for the next year. Additionally, the event will be streamed online and if you are an SEAW member outside of Seattle, talk to your local SEAW leadership for plans for watch parties for each chapter.

We look forward to finishing out 2023 strong! It is a great honor to support the mission to advance structural engineering through scholarships, education, research, and outreach. Contact us with any comments at admin@sefw.org!

WAsafe Website Has Launched!

By Joyce Lem, Chair, DPRC

Please explore the newly launched WAsafe website. We will be revising our “Plan B” Disaster Preparation / Response Committee webpage on the SEAW website, with a link to the WAsafe website.

The WAsafe website will soon be posting info about and links to upcoming classses and on-demand trainings, such as the Online Refresher Course for WAsafe Building Safety Evaluators (BSEs). Also, the guide for enrolling as a volunteer in the online WAserv registry, a list of equipment to take when you are deployed in the field, and the table of BSE Types with qualifications and responsibilities can be viewed and downloaded from the website. The website includes links to other state programs, relevant Washington State law, and a separate section for jurisdictions on requesting volunteer BSEs.

Finally, it is a new website and probably contains a few mistakes! Please use the website’s Contact Us page if you find an issue or correction, or to reach out if you have questions.

Visit the new WAsafe website and explore the “Volunteer” tab.

What is WAsafe?

WAsafe is the statewide program for volunteer Building Safety Evaluators (BSEs). WAsafe’s purpose is to assist building officials with building safety assessments following a disaster such as a major earthquake, when it is likely that building departments will be overwhelmed by the number of structures needing review for safe occupancy.

The primary objective of the SEAW Disaster Preparation & Response Committee (DPRC) has been to support development and roll-out of the WAsafe program. It’s an ongoing effort. To help or to stay abreast of developments, join the DPRC email list. See the DPRC webpage for details. Committee meetings are held online on the third Tuesday of the month, Noon – 1pm (links given in the emailed agendas a few days in advance of the meeting). The DPRC welcomes new members and those who just want to find out more about what we are up to.

If you have any questions about the DPRC or the WAsafe program, please feel free to contact Joyce Lem at joyce.seaw@wasafecoalition.org

Bellevue Kzt Map up for review, SWR White Paper submitted to SBCC

By Scott Douglas, WEC

The Wind Engineering Committee submits the following report for September:

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!

  • City of Bellevue Kzt Map – At the September meeting the SEAW WEC will review the final draft of the Kzt Wind Load Factor map for the City of Bellevue’s consideration. It will replicate the existing City of Seattle Wind Load Factor Map found at Wind Load Factors - SDCI | seattle.gov. If adopted the map will facilitate an alternate conservative method for rapid determination of Kzt factors and shoreline exposure in the City of Bellevue.
  • Update to the 2004 SEAW commentary on wind code provisions (ATC 60) – The NCSEA CAC Wind Engineering Subcommittee continues this update effort. An updated draft of Chapter 13 Questions 1, 2 and 3 discussing Unusual Wind Load Conditions will be reviewed at the September meeting.
  • Washington/Columbia Special Wind Regions (SWR) Study – The SEAW White Paper WEC #3-2023 , ASCE 7 Special Wind Regions in Washington State, is now posted on the SEAW website Structural Engineers Assocation of Washington (squarespace.com). The recommendations in White Paper WEC #3-2023 are being submitted for adoption by the Washington State Building Code Council. The recommendations, along with recommendations for the State of Oregon SWRs, will be submitted to the ASCE 7-28 Subcommittee on Wind Loads for balloting.
  • Participation - All SEAW members, whatever their experience, are encouraged to participate in WEC meetings. Please contact the WEC chair, Scott Douglas sdouglasscott@gmail.com, to join the SEAW WEC and receive additional information and announcements on Committee activities and actions.
