Queens Public Library Hosts "Hip Hop 50 Summit" at LaGuardia
The Queens Public Library (QPL) celebrated the 50th anniversary of the founding of hip hop with a summit, held at LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC) here on campus. Last week's two-day event was emceed by LaGuardia graduate Ralph McDaniels, Hip Hop Coordinator for QPL and Video Music Box founder, and DJ G$Money. President Kenneth Adams gave welcoming remarks to the hundreds in attendance at the summit kickoff. New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams also spoke, highlighting the personal and global influence of hip hop. Panel discussions on the history of hip hop and its cultural, social and economic impact with hip hop pioneers, performers, and scholars including Darryl McDaniels of Run-DMC and KRS-One, the singer Lumidee, Universal Hip Hop Museum Founder and Executive Director Rocky Bucano, and VIBE Editor-in-Chief Datwon Thomas.

President Adams Meets with Cultural Affairs Leaders
LaGuardia continues to build collaborative partnerships to expand its cultural programming and community outreach. On August 7, the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Laurie Cumbo, and the Cultural Affairs Deputy Commissioner, Alton Murray, visited LaGuardia’s campus. They met with President Kenneth Adams, who led a tour of the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center's Main Stage Theater and Little Theater.

All members of our community are welcome to access services provided through LaGuardia CARES. LaGuardia CARES offers a food pantry and clothing closet, as well as assistance in applying for public benefits, healthcare recertification, and access to legal services. LaGuardia Red Hawks Basketball Program Hosts Clinic
Last week, LaGuardia Men’s basketball players participated in skills and drills and a summer scrimmage against an international team that included players between the ages of 15 and 19 years. Coach Jarrett Lockhart put the players through offensive and defensive drills and coached the Red Hawks to a 87-46 victory against the visiting team. Coach Lockhart said the basketball clinic offered all players an opportunity to work on their skills and to develop valuable, trusting relationships with your teammates both on and off the court. LaGuardia Men’s and Women’s Red Hawks Basketball schedules are drafted for 2023-2024. Students, faculty and staff are invited to cheer on the Red Hawks!!

LaGuardia Men’s Soccer Finalizes 2023-2024 Schedule
Red Hawks are preparing to take the soccer field, with their first match at Suffolk Community College on September 7 at 4 p.m. Read the Men’s Soccer schedule to learn about upcoming games this season. LaGuardia students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend and cheer for the Red Hawks!

HRAssist is Here!
HRAssist, the new automated time and leave system/attendance system for full-time employees that is replacing the paper process, launched on August 6 for full-time Civil Service employees. It is going live for full-time PSC, ECP, and Classified Managerial employees on August 13. Please click here to login to HRAssist.
HR recently conducted training sessions for departmental supervisors and managers who will train their full-time staff. How-to videos and manuals are also available online.

Commuter Benefits Program Updates (MTA Fare Changes)
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will be increasing their fares on Sunday, August 20, 2023. If you are using your NYC Commuter Card to purchase an MTA product, you may need to increase your monthly payroll deduction. The payroll portal is now available for you to make updates. For more information about the fare increases, please visit https://new.mta.info/transparency/mta-fares-tolls-2023. To check your NYC Commuter Card balance, log into your Edenred account. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact FISA OPA by calling 1-833-584-8109 (Monday- Friday, 8 a.m.- 8 p.m.).
