EXPERIENTIAL Learning

"Learning by doing" is an integral part of NSU University School's mission. Experiential learning is woven into the curriculum at all levels—from attending a leadership seminar in first grade to designing and building a prosthetic hand in seventh grade science, to pitching a new idea for a business as a sophomore or junior in high school. For upper school students, fellowships, internships, and seminars provide insight into career fields, as well as opportunities for hands-on learning.

Hispanic Heritage Month

NSU recognizes Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15) by celebrating and learning about the Hispanic culture through various activities. The NSU Alvin Sherman Library is hosting a series of events, culminating with a Day of Dead Celebration on Oct. 10 that will feature musical and dance performances from Ameyal Mexican Cultural Organization.

Other events sponsored by campus organizations include a salsa night, Loteria, speaker series, and art workshops. Most events are free and open to the NSU community and public.

GIVING Opportunity

The Puerto Rico Community Outreach Program began in 2017 after the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria. Not only did the heavy rains, strong wind gusts, and storm surge cause extensive damage to the island itself, but the ramifications to the country's infrastructure—especially in terms of available medical care—are still being felt to this day.

The NSU Doctor of Physical Therapy and Mental Health Counseling Programs in the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus and the Tampa Bay Regional Campus, in collaboration with the NSU Puerto Rico Regional Campus, visit the island twice a year to provide health screenings.

About the Artist

The masthead for this month's issue was created by Sofía Aurora Guerra Cardona. Originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Cardona moved to Florida to pursue a higher education at NSU. A member of the Razor's Edge Shark Talent Program and a Presidential Scholar, she will graduate in December with degree in art and design. In the future, Cardona hopes to work as a full-time designer at an ad agency or her own design business.

"I believe that design has a responsibility to communicate, connect, inform, and deliver a message in a beautiful and effective way," Cardona said. "Moving forward, I hope to create designs that have a life of their own and impact the world, in the same way that design has given me life and impacted me."
