News & Notes from Fr. Pete Jankowski

What I Did During My

Fall Break

Dear

Mrs. Crabtree (Let’s See If Anyone Gets THAT Reference) …

After a LOOONG weekend with four baptisms, two Quinceañeras and a partridge in a pear tree, I decided to take a week off to unwind at the Poor Clare Guest House at the Annunciation Monastery in Minooka, IL. There, I was able to take long naps while working diligently on the courses I am teaching this fall at the university.

On my way to the convent, The CCW at St. Patrick’s in Momence asked me to bring their knitted blankets made from shopping bags, as well as home-knitted hats and gloves to The El Centro Vilaseca Daycare Center in Joliet, IL where a group of religious sisters (Las Hermanas Josefinas) run a daycare center for low-income families on the east side of the city. The sisters have helped the poor in Joliet for over forty years, even though they have not one new vocation to show for the good work they offer the city (hint hint). The children at the daycare center were so ecstatic about these little gifts that they posed for pictures with the sisters in showing off their new clothes to keep warm this upcoming snowy and cold winter season.

Because I live at the convent, the sisters ask me to celebrate all services for them IN LATIN, in the extraordinary form (the Mass prior to Vatican II). The sisters added THREE new vocations to their cloister this year… and one of them specializes in music! All this week, the organ was replaced during their Masses with music from the HARP (this is the first time in twenty-six years as a priest that I have prayed to Harp music at a liturgy!) Regardless of whether they know it or not (or all of you readers, for that matter), the Poor Clare nuns are responsible for me connecting with Nick Skokna (the chip guy in the area), who acted like Santa Claus one night while I was sleeping when he dropped off TEN PALLETS (OVER 400 BOXES) of Tostitos and Lime-Flavored Potato Chips in my garage at night. Because of Nick’s generosity, we were able to feed the students attending Immaculate Conception School in Morris, the students at the University of St. Francis, the good folks at St. Joseph’s Church in Joliet (where I also celebrate Mass) and the local food pantries in the area. One of the staff at the University (Glen Gummess) now wants to interview us on his television program for the city and our promise to follow Mt 25 (“when I was hungry…”) and the Prayer of St. Francis (“for it is in giving that we receive.”).

When I sent a note out concerning this kind gift, Connie Stirling from the St. Anne/Martinton Food Pantry and Paul/Janice Gelino from St. Patrick’s in Momence took a road trip up to Minooka to grab a bunch of these chips for the needy of Kankakee County. Even when I am trying to rest… THE PARISHIONERS OF THE BORDER TOWN ARE STALKING ME!!! Lot of folks were fed because of Nick, who works through the good sisters!

Back on the home front, Jim Sparenberg told me that the sidewalk project at St. Anne’s was completed by those who volunteered their service time for the parish. Lord knows how much that would have cost if we paid conventional funds for the project! We also have to thank the city of St. Anne and Mayor David O’Connell for providing financial resources to help us with this project as well. Then Sue Bonvallet told me that husband Denis offered free labor to protect our rectory with surge protectors for the whole building. It seems that the rectory at Anne’s is a “lightning rod” for anything that can go wrong and does in that otherwise wonderful city.

Over at St. Pat’s, the Poor Clare Nuns and Nick Skokna gifted us with volunteers who upgraded our church roof and helped us with the gym bathroom project (thanks to our Knights of Columbus for providing funds so that we could purchase the concrete for this project!). Because so many in the community witnessed what we have been doing these last few years (thanks Wally Martin for helping us renovate four houses on a dime!!!). Joe Kraus helped us repair our balcony church wall at Pat’s that suffered from the water damage from the roof. Joe and his sons are volunteering their labor to work on the gym bathroom at Pat’s with the help of Joe Cohn; through the Poor Clare Sisters, Nick Skokna connected my with Boss Plumbing, who is taking care of the plumbing and fixtures of this bathroom for free! Robert Piquet and a group from Alcoholics Anonymous have been gutting the second floor of the gym to make it usable for parish functions. A dividing wall has been removed, all refuse has been tossed, the walls have been painted and the rooms have been cleaned. Wally Martin will return to install new windows for the rooms which were the victim of all kinds of vandalism and Ted Peterson & Van Drunen Farms are helping with a drop ceiling and carpeting. We have electricians who will help us complete the lighting work etc. both on the gym second floor and the bathroom as well.

When I returned to the Border Town parishes, I was met by Chief of Police, Brian Bucato (I thought he was taking me away in cuffs… I was trying to figure out WHY!!!). We had a really nice talk – Chief Bucato informed me that not only is the gym an emergency center for seniors, it also is an emergency center for the students at our public schools… all the more reason to safeguard this important building on our property!!!

Mrs. Crabtree, I feel honored to work with the holy “rascals” at the border town parishes (get the reference yet?) that have come together as a body of

Christ to do this work in God’s name. God bless all that have helped us preserve the beautiful properties under our care!

Sincerely,

Fr. Pete Jankowski

St. Patrick's Religious Education Bake Sale & Hispanic Ministry Food Sale of Enchiladas, Tamales, Fruit and Corn in the Cup (elotes) takes place after the 10:30 & 12:00 Masses in the Church basement.

Fr. Pete Paid Off the Parish Truck!

Sometime back, Mary Tolmer was kind enough to work out a deal with Fr. Pete so that he could buy maintenance guru Artemio Ojeda a $20,000 truck (he did the same for the maintenance man at the last parish as well – that truck cost $30,000… Fr. Pete is getting cheap!). Fr. Pete worked out a deal with Mary to pay the money back in a type of non-interest bearing loan. Fr. Pete had a couple bumps along the way, but today Fr. Pete gave Kathy Griffiths the last $1000 that he owed on the truck.

Fr. Pete still owes $3000 or so for other items he have purchased on behalf of the parishes. Much of what he is doing is self-imposed but it is still the right thing to do and Fr. Pete intends to hold up to his debts. Fr. Pete just wanted to be upfront with all of you so that you knew what he did for Artemio and the parishes so that we could keep him here on the property FOR A LONG TIME!!!

For only $100, you can dedicate a brick to someone special at St. Patrick's Outdoor Grotto (where the Our Lady of Lourdes Outdoor Masses are celebrated)!!! call (815) 472-2864.
