CYRE News
Pre-K-5th & 6th -12th
Hello Parents and Caregivers! This Sunday we begin our Summer Programming where we invite members from the congregation to teach a class to our kids. Luckily for us, Zena Tucker has volunteered to lead our kids in rock painting! We will be providing aprons for our younger kids, but accidents are bound to happen. Please have your child wear older clothing since we will be using acrylic paint that will stain
if not immediately washed out. See you this Sunday as we rock on!
Summer Plans
In previous years at UUCH, adults would volunteer to teach a class during the summer and present a topic or skill of their choosing. We will be attempting to do this again for the months of June and July. Classes will include ages pre-k all the way up to high school seniors. If this sounds intimidating, don’t worry--CYRE teachers will still be available to assist. If there are any supplies that you would like to have provided, please contact dre@uuch.org. You can find the signup here, and thank you so much for contributing to the success of our CYRE program!
OWL Registration
Who, who, who wants to register for OWL? That’s right folks, we are finally relaunching our OWL program and will be opening our class offerings to the community as well! This year we will be holding classes for our Pre-K – 1St graders and our 10th – 12th graders.
For anyone who is unfamiliar with OWL, Our Whole Lives takes a holistic view of sexuality by providing accurate, age-appropriate information while helping people to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. More information about the overall program can be found on the UUA website.
Dates for our 10th-12th graders are still being arranged, and will announce these in the newsletter. We are planning on holding an orientation in August and workshops will kick off in September after Labor Day. Most of these dates will be on a Sunday after church service.
All workshops for our Pre-K – 1st graders will be held on Sundays from 12:15PM – 1:45 PM and will include lunch. There will be a mandatory parent/caregiver meeting 8/25/2024 from 12:15PM – 2:15PM. The workshops will begin after Labor Day and will be held on the following Sundays: 9/8, 9/15, 9/22, 10/13, 10/20, 10/27, 11/3, and 11/10. If you would like to register, you may do so here.
If you have any additional questions, please contact our DRE Kristen Warrington at dre@uuch.org

UUCH Marching for Pride! Saturday, June 29, 2024
Join us as we march in the Rocket City Pride Parade to show our love and support for the LGBTQ+ Community. This year’s parade is Saturday, June 29th in the heart of downtown Huntsville. The parade starts at 10am for spectators but get there by 9am to line up and march with us. We will meet at the parking lot across from the downtown Huntsville Post Office on Clinton. There is plenty of parking and you will see all the exciting rainbows and floats lined up for the parade.
This is always a fun and colorful time for all ages so put on your yellow “Side with Love” t-shirt or your rainbow colors and come walk proudly behind our UUCH banner. It is an important time to continue to show our loving support for equality for all, so please come join the parade. If you have any questions, contact Nancy Finley (secretary@uuch.org).

Poverty, by America: A Book Discussion
Sunday July 14 and August 11 @ 12:15 pm in ARE room
"To understand the causes of poverty, we must look beyond the poor. Those of us living lives of privilege and plenty must examine ourselves… Most government aid goes to families that need it the least. If you add up the amount that the government is dedicating to tax breaks — mortgage interest deduction, wealth transfer tax breaks, tax breaks we get on our retirement accounts, our health insurance, our college savings accounts — you learn that we are doing so much more to subsidize affluence than to alleviate poverty… And this is the way we designed it.” - Matthew Desmond
This exercise asks you to read Matthew Desmond’s highly celebrated book, Poverty, by America.
As the above quotation suggests, it is a book that challenges those of us in the middle and moderately affluent classes to look at the ways we knowingly and unknowingly keep poor people poor. This is not a role we are used to. When it comes to economic injustice, we privileged liberals are much more comfortable naming the problems than being named as the problem.
But alongside that discomfort lies a feeling of being liberated. Desmond is not out to guilt his reader. Rather, his aim is empowerment and understanding. You will leave this book with more compassion, more commitment, and a clearer path forward.
If you are looking to join a social justice project, this is the one being done by the Adult Religious Education
Childcare provided upon request. Please contact Teri Thomas, adult.re@uuch.org

New Mission and Vision Vote June 23, 2024
The Mission and Vision Team wants to thank you for the wonderful feedback on the proposed Mission and Vision Statements we recently presented to you all for consideration. We heard your suggestions and ideas and worked to develop a document that represents us as a community. With all the town hall meeting input last fall, multiple meetings by the Mission and Vision Team, open discussion meetings with the congregation, and many rewrites, we believe we have a document that truly reflects who we are and our vision for the future.
We will be voting on the new Mission and Vision at our annual congregational meeting on June 23, 2024. We hope that you will familiarize yourself with them and attend the meeting ready to vote. You can read them here. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact any member of the Team (Nancy Finley, Cam Scales, Nick Wilbourn, and Rev. Jaimie). We are happy to hear from you.

Little Food Pantry
Signups for the LFP have slowed to a trickle unless you are filling it without signing up in the signup genius. It’s hard to know. Our LFP is a much needed service to the neighborhood. Fill it with nutritious foods. Folks rarely take garbanzo beans or lentils (even though they are nutritious). Let’s try to keep the pantry going! Please, if you are able to fill it up, please note your name in the Genius. Also, you can bring non perishables to church, as there are baskets. A big thank you to all who do contribute!
