Sixty Seconds with the Superintendent

Each week, we receive questions for the Superintendent from students in pre-K through 12th grade. In this video series, Ms. Beamon will answer these questions and help our families and the community we serve get to know the leader of our public schools.

What's Cool in Our Schools

Local Author Visits Eastbrook Elementary

Local author Rae Marsh stopped by Eastbrook Elementary School this week to read excerpts from her book Love, Maggie.

Students were able to learn more about becoming an author and Rae's own personal journey to becoming one.

After discussing what they themselves like to write about, students were let in on a little secret... the theme of the 3rd book!

Thank you for visiting, Rae!

English Estates Elementary Celebrates "Around the World"

English Estates Elementary celebrated their school-wide "Diversity Around the World Night" hosted by their PTA. They showcased how different countries celebrate New Year’s Eve. There were over ten countries represented by their families and staff.

Students went around the world with their passport to get a stamp, sample food from the different countries and learn about their New Year’s traditions.

After, students were able to visit the media center and participate in the book fair. It was a very well attended night with many wonderful learning opportunities for the entire school community.

SCPS Hosts First Ever "Finding Your Voice" Girl's Summit to Teach Conflict Resolution and Positive Citizenship

To navigate the national trend of increased fighting in schools, particularly among girls, the Assistant Superintendents over middle and elementary schools at SCPS created a unique event. The team brought together 120+ girls for the first ever SCPS Girl's Summit, called "Finding Your Voice," to learn skills about positive behavior and conflict resolution. The girls were able to interact with skits led by SCPS team members and a special guest speaker.

This day of learning centered on the theme that "Finding Your Voice" is about understanding their value and the value of others. It also centered around harnessing their power and recognizing that younger students and siblings look up to these young ladies, and how to use their influence in a positive way.

The event was very well received, and several community partners have expressed interest in supporting this event for years to come. We are incredibly proud of this first cohort of students who participated and look forward to many becoming leaders in their schools using the tools and resources they acquired through this event.
