Fire Prevention Week runs Oct. 8 - 14

"Cooking safety starts with YOU! Pay attention to fire prevention" is the theme of this year's National Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 8 - 14, 2023.

This year’s focus on cooking safety works to educate the public about simple but important steps they can take to help reduce the risk of fire when cooking at home, keeping themselves and those around them safe.

According to NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires, with nearly half (49 percent) of all home fires involving cooking equipment; cooking is also the leading cause of home fire injuries. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home cooking fires and related deaths. In addition, NFPA data shows that cooking is the only major cause of fire that resulted in more fires and fire deaths in 2014-2018 than in 1980-1984.

Turn your clocks back one hour Nov. 5, check smoke detector batteries

Don't forget to set your clocks back one hour when Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday, Nov. 5. It's also a great time to check your smoke alarm battery and carbon monoxide detector battery, as many need replacing every six months.

Check the manufacturer date of your smoke alarms while changing your batteries. It is recommended that you replace your smoke alarms every 10 years. You can find the manufacturer date on the bottom side of the detector, usually on a sticker located near the battery compartment.

Learn lithium-ion battery charging safety tips

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly found in electric vehicles, devices, and systems that the public and first responders use or interact with daily.

While these batteries provide an effective and efficient source of power, the likelihood of them overheating, catching on fire, and even leading to explosions increases when they are damaged or improperly used, charged, or stored.

View safety tips and resources that promote a safer use of lithium-ion batteries across a wide range of applications, from cellphones to vehicles to energy storage systems.
