Welcome to Quilting News
August 2023
Message from Lisa
Hello to all my August ladies and I hope this email finds you rested, and I hope that you have had time to slow down and sew a little during this summertime.

As I have had time over the past few weeks to start working on my fall schedule, I hope that you will find a few of these classes interesting and will sign up to do a little different kind of sewing. It seems that many ladies are working on smaller projects these days and I know that a few of these will fit right into your plan. I also am going to offer a kit that will be cut from my stash, and you can sew here on Thursdays or at home. It is really hard to plan ahead as we never know what is around the corner for us. Some had had sickness in their families and that takes away from our sewing, but family comes first in all of our lives. Yesterday I visited the ortho doctor and was diagnosed with carpel tunnel in both of my wrist. I now have braces to wear at night and I got a nice shot in my right wrist. Hurts like HELL, I tell you, but I hope for some relief soon.

I will be hosting my annual SPOOKTACULAR this year for I think year 7 or 8. Time flies when something fun comes around. I only have 13 spots for this event and the price and signup will start next month. October 28th is the date of this event.

I will also be away from November 1-4th as I will be attending the Houston Quilt Show during that time. I have always wanted to go, and I made it happen this year and I hope to have a great time while away.

Well take a look below at all the exciting things we can offer for you here at Shining Star. I hope to see and hear from your very soon.

Quilting ladies are the best friends you can have for life.

See you soon!

Lisa

Rope Bowl Class
We have a very special lady in our group who has been teaching the world about Rope Bowls. I have asked Cindy Farinholt to teach two classes in September for our group. Anyone can come. We will have a weekday class and a Saturday class for our Full-time workers. The supply list is below for the class. You need to have a Zig Zag machine and a correct foot. We will provide the rope and the fabric for the class to keep the cost down. I hope you will sign up for one of our classes at the small fee of $30 per person. Again, your payment will hold your spot. Space is limited so sign up fast!

  • Zigzag sewing machine
  • open toe or zigzag foot for machine
  • Denim needle
  • 50 wt cotton thread white or a color to match
  • several pre-wound bobbins
  • Roxanne's fabric glue
  • Wonder Clips
  • Stiletto
  • Pin, scissors, seam ripper

Quilting Sisters
Learning and having a heart of giving is what this group is about. We constantly want to learn new things and be challenged at making our work better. But we also have a heart of giving to those who need it. We will be using the conference room at the Firehouse, 1956 Urbine Road, Powhatan, VA 23139. We start at 9 AM and sew until 1 PM.

Our next meeting is August 12th, starting at 9 am. We are doing a three-yard challenge with our group. You may bring your project to work on at the August meeting or a project of your own. I have the two patterns we are working from so you can bring your fabrics and pick a pattern. Please have hour quilts ready for the October meeting as we will share the different ways we make our quilts, and you can keep your quilt or donate it to one of our charities. We have been asked by VCU NICU for quilts. If you have one to donate, please bring it to our August meeting. If you If you have any show and tell for the group, we love to see your quilts that you have completed.

We support a nursing home in Farmville, and you can give quilts to Betsy. She will deliver those when they need them.

Future Projects:
August - Work on your challenge quilt or a project of your choice
September -Demonstration from Colleen
October - Three Yard Challenge Quilts
November - Veterans Appreciation Day
December - Silent Auction & Breakfast
Wooly Friends Group
Welcome to a very new and special group of ladies. Our next meeting is Tuesday, AUGUST 15th. We will be working at the Studio that day. Bring a project that you are working on and a small snack to share. We have a great time in this group, and we love sharing all the different things with each other. Our road trip last month was SUPER FUN!!! We hope to make another road trip in the fall of the year. She has a wonderful shop filled with lots of things and we found a quilt store just around the corner. The ice cream stop was extra special. Thanks Betsy, for that and to Betsy and Phyllis for driving.
We welcome more people to join us any month. Please join our fun and exciting group of ladies. Hope to see you very soon!
Sip & Sew Gathering
We will be having a Saturday Sip & Sew on August 26th. This gives our full-time workers a chance to join us and have some fun. So, pack a snack and Lisa will have a cold icy drink ready if you want one. Make sure you bring your project to work on or just come and talk with everyone. It is a great day! Starts at 9 AM! $5 seat charge for the day. Thanks.
Paper Piecing Tree Blocks
I have been asked by many to teach a small paper piecing project. So last year I worked on this small tree one that Kathleen Tracy put out on her site. So, I'm going to offer again two classes on this project, and I will provide you with the papers and you need. Bring your machine and your fabrics with you to this class. You will get taught how to put your fabrics together and make these little trees at our class. You can make as many as you want. A table runner is a great size to start with. So, gather your Christmas fabrics or any fabrics you want and sign up for this class. Cost $25.

Three Day Sew Retreat
Need a few extra days to sew away from your home? Well you can sign up for a Monday-Wednesday full three days of sewing and leave your machine and projects while you go home and sleep. I'm going to try this and see how it goes. I'm going to give you a full table to work at so that is going to limit spaces. So there will be only 13 spots at each 3-day sewing. You will hold your spot with payment of $15.00. Not refundable if you don't show. The doors will open each day at 9 am and close about 5:30 pm. I will host the first one on August and the second one in September.
So, look at your calendar and see if you can make it!

SPOOKTACULAR
YES, we will be having this event again this year. I decided that since I was going to be gone the following week, that it was the least I could do for my Ladies. So, starting next month I will take payments to hold the limited spots for this event. Stay tuned for amount and those reservations.
Kits coming soon.... for sale
Do you have this Thimble Creek pattern called Ryokan? I 've had mine for a while. I would like to cut up some of my stash and make kits for this 12-block project. This will be available in the fall for sale. am going to make a block a week for 12 weeks. This will go past Christmas and into January I'm pretty sure. I will let you know next month the cost on this project. I will only provide fabric for the blocks. You will need to do the sashing and the borders. Sounds like a great plan to me! I hope you will sign up so I can get a count for how many I need to cut. The kit will be $85.00
You will need to have a copy of the pattern for this project. So, you have time to find one now.!
Quilters Daycare Group
Quilter's Daycare is a Thursday sew group. Please make sure that you slide over and make room for everyone that wants to sew. We have an additional room that can hold only 4 sewers. We want everyone to feel welcome. We have missed many of you. Your $5 covers your seat charge each Thursday. See you soon! Reminder the door opens at 9 am, not earlier. (I'm with mom getting her up and ready for her day)
Prayers for many of our quilting sisters.....
Keep in our prayers. Lynah, Delma, Merci and her husband, Cindy Lyles and her Husband, any those who are traveling. We don't always know about everyone, and I try to call those who have not been around. Please give me a ring if you know of someone we need to add to our list. So please pray for healing and traveling mercies for our Quilting Sisters. We have a very special group of ladies and you each have a special place in my heart! Lisa
Thanks and see you soon!
We have a new Purple Bag for our quilting customers. Please bring a bag with your project that you are dropping off. Thanks!
Payment is accepted by Cash, Check, Venmo, Zelle and Paypal.

See you soon! Trixie and Lisa
