11th Annual Eastern West Virginia Juried Art Exhibit
The Berkeley Arts Council in Martinsburg, West Virginia announces the 11th Annual Eastern West Virginia Juried Exhibit, on display now through October 7, 2023. at the Berkeley Art Works, 116 North Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV.
This annual juried exhibit is open to artists who reside in any of the eight counties that comprise the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia: Berkeley, Jefferson, Morgan, Hampshire, Hardy, Grant, Mineral, and Pendleton.
The Juror this year was Rebecca Grace Jones. She received an MFA from Towson University where she was a senior lecturer in the art department for twelve years. She worked concurrently as a freelance illustrator, winning numerous awards and having her illustrations featured in the New York Society of Illustrators annual publication. Jones has curated gallery exhibits, taught privately and now makes her living as a painter.
In her statement she wrote: âIt was inspiring to see the wealth of talent we have here in the eastern panhandle. The abundance of strong entries presented a challenge when narrowing down the number to be exhibited. In reviewing the work submitted I found myself drawn, not exclusively but to a certain extent, to that which suggested how living in this region of our state might have influenced the artist. The goal was to use this concept to build an exhibit in which each piece enhances the other so that together the grouping makes a valid statement as well as an appealing presentation.â
The Berkeley Art Works is open Wednesday-Friday 11-5, Saturday, 11-4. For more information, contact the Berkeley Arts Council at berkeleyartswv@gmail.com.

The Sharpsburg Historical Society (SHS) will present a program on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2023, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 209 West Main Street, Sharpsburg, about Garnet Jex's paintings of The Upper Potomac in the Civil War.
SHS will display 50 of the original 51 paintings. (SHS knows which painting is missing from the series but does not know its whereabouts.)
These paintings, owned by the historical society, have not been displayed publicly since 2012 as part of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam.
There will be a short lecture about Jex and the paintings that were created for the Washington, D.C., Civil War centennial observation.
The program is free and open to all. Contact VernellD@aol.com or call 301 992 9767.
