Presidents' Day: No School

ASOP will be closed on Monday, February 20, for Presidents' Day.

Welcome Back, Rosa!

Rosa returned to Kansas after a long visit with her family in Argentina. She returned to teach Spanish at ASOP on January 9. Welcome back, Rosa! We missed you!

Construction Education Award

The National Institute for Construction Excellence recently recognized ASOP with the Construction Education Award. For several years, Denise has been taking juniors and seniors to the IBuild Conference at Bartle Hall for them to learn about opportunities in construction. Denise said that usually 4-6 students and sometimes their parents attend this event. Several students have found their dream jobs through construction becoming electricians, plumbers and welders.

New Sign Language Teacher Joins Staff

Gina Ley has joined the ASOP staff as a sign language teacher. This semester she will be teaching Sign Language 2. Gina has taught American Sign Language (ASL) for over 25 years. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Art with an emphasis in photography from Stephen F. Austin State University, Nacogdoches, TX, and a Master's Degree in Deaf Education from McDaniel College, Westminster, MD.

Gina is deaf and was born in the United Kingdom. She said she started teaching, "because someone believe in me and thought I could teach."

"I love to teach and tutor people how to sign," she said. "I started teaching sign language in 1994."

She loves "football" (soccer). Her father was a professional soccer player. Gina said, "Football is my life!" So she supports Arsenal Women's Football Club (UK).

In her spare time she continues her interest in photography and loves to clean and organize things.

Community Service:

Veterans Community Project

ASOP students will be collecting hygiene products for the Veterans Community Project (VCP) during February.

Previously we collected 255 pairs of socks before winter break for the VCP.

On January 12, Kristin Griffin from the Veterans Community Project came to school to explain the different aspects of the project which helps both homeless veterans and all veterans in need. Kristin was delighted to receive the socks, which were presented by members of the Student Council.

Thank you for your support of our community service project.

Inclement Weather

With winter weather coming, be aware there might be days when we will not hold classes at ASOP. We will publish information on Facebook, Instagram, and the website, www.Acceleratedschoolsop.org, as well as on broadcast media if classes will not be held.

However, not coming into school does not mean there will be a traditional snow day. Teachers will post work for the students to do at home on Google Classroom.

If you have any questions please contact Jane or Annie.

Friday Clubs

Starting this semester, ASOP students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of clubs during resource period on Fridays: chess, silent reading, board/card games, crafts/3D printing, vocal music and role playing games. Resource time is still available for students who need time to finish assignments.

The Student Council, under the guidance of their advisor Travis, helped to organize this new program. Teachers offered to moderate the clubs based on their interests.
