Hello Joanne,

Summer camp prep is really heating up. This month we take time away from all the party planning to test out what we have planned for CTE CAMP 2023!!!

Developing our fun filled CTE summer camp for the past 7 years has provided some tried and trusted kid fun. Today, I'm sharing one of my recent favorites for your at home enjoyment.

Let the countdown to Summer begin.

HOMEMADE MILKY BUNS

At our recent Spring Break Camp this baking fun activity was such a big hit that it will for sure be making a summer camp appearance.

Supplies Needed:

Measuring Cups

Measuring Spoons

Spatula

Wisk

Mixing Bowls

Baking Pan

Brush

Towel

Ingredients:

¾ cup warm milk

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

2 ½ teaspoons active dry yeast

1 egg

3 tablespoons melted butter

2 tablespoons dry milk powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 ½ - 3 cups bread flour

Steps:

  1. Whisk the milk, sugar and yeast together in a large bowl then let it sit for 10 minutes or until it starts to get frothy (you’ll see bubbles forming).
  2. Stir in the egg, butter, milk powder and salt.
  3. Add 2 ½ cups of flour, ½ cup at a time, stirring between each ½ cup until you can no longer stir.
  4. Lightly flour a countertop then take the dough and knead for 10 minutes, adding a dust of flour when it gets too sticky to handle, but don’t add too much or the buns will be stiff.
  5. Form the dough into a ball then place it back in the bowl and cover with a towel.
  6. Let it rise for 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  7. Spray a 9-inch round baking pan or an 8×8 inch baking pan with non-stick spray.
  8. Form the dough into 9 equal balls and cover with a towel to rise for 30 more minutes or until they have doubled in size.
  9. About 10 minutes before the buns are ready to bake, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  10. Bake on the middle rack for 15 minutes or until the buns turn a light brown color on top. Check the buns after 5 minutes, oven temperatures vary and they may cook more quickly.
  11. Let them rest for 10 minutes before brushing the tops with milk and serving with butter if desired.
