SERVE ON THE DOWNTOWN AREA CITIZEN COUNCIL
Do you reside in the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) District? You might be if you live on Ames, River, Bridge Streets, or other areas as designated by the map below. The DDA is looking for volunteers to serve on the Development Area Citizens Council (DACC) for two meetings – one in October and one in November – to gather citizen input on the upcoming TIF Plan update. If you are interested, please email Village Clerk Kaitlyn Szczypka at kszczypka@elkrapids.org no later than September 6, 2023. She will put your name on a list for DDA board consideration. BOATER SAFETY CLASS OFFERED IN
ELK RAPIDS
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2023
Boat America, an 8-hour class, is a boater safety class for novice recreational boaters ages 12 and older. The class is being offered by the Traverse City Coast Guard Auxiliary. Topics covered include boating safety and safety equipment, emergency procedures, navigation rules and aids, and boating regulations. The class will meet on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Harbor Pavilion in Elk Rapids. The class will meet from 8 am to 5 pm with a lunch break at noon. You must attend all 8 hours to get your boater safety certificate. The cost is $15 to cover cost of book and certificate. The Elk Rapids Players present
Theater Experience for Kids
Grades 3 to 6, on August 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, and 16 at the Historic Elk Rapids Town Hall.
This workshop will feature song, dance, and creative drama to produce a show including songs from the hit movies, “Sponge Bob Square Pants”, “Finding Nemo”, “Polar Express”, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, and “Shrek”. Each participant will receive a song pack and a workshop T-shirt.
Daily Schedules will run from 9:30 to 2;30 with a break for lunch (bring a sack lunch and a drink). On the 16th, the group will put on a show at 6:30 in the evening. The price is $95.00 and scholarship opportunities are available.

"White Christmas" Auditions
From the same Director and Producer that brought you “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”, the Elk Rapids Players will be holding auditions for their upcoming presentation of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Audition dates are August 7th, 8th,14th, and 15th with callbacks to be August 21st and 22nd at the Historic Elk Rapids Town Hall. Rehearsals to begin August 28th show dates to be November 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th 10th, 11th, 12th, 17th, 18th and 19th. Times of events to be announced.
Auditions will be for voice and dance. All lead characters will both sing and dance. However, there are roles for almost every skill level.

His original music reflects the sounds he was brought up with, combining elements from the traditions of Jazz, South American Folklore, Klezmer, Tango, and Middle Eastern traditions. He graduated from the prestigious Berklee College of Music and is now performing and recording internationally.

There is a $10 fee for this workshop which includes your soil, fertilizer, and decorative stone. Simply pay for the additional items/plants you use.
Friday, August 25th @ 2 pm Fairy Gardens: Create your own miniature garden in this fun workshop-style class. Bring your own container or use one of ours. There is a $30 base fee for this workshop which includes one fairy miniature (less than $15), 2 plants, soil, and various natural elements (stone, bark, sand, etc.). Walstrom Marine is hosting Women in Boating classes! These classes are guided by Walstrom Marine, president, Tom Ervin. Tom has 25 years of experience in the Marine Industry and has led multiple classes and boating trips throughout the Great Lakes.
These small classes are designed for women to learn the basics of boating and to be confident on the water. Tom will lead the group and go over some boating basics, docking, and maneuvering on the water. Each class is split between classroom and on-water learning. Whether you are a new boater entering the industry or just need a few more boating tips, join us on the water for Women in Boating.

The Paddle Antrim Festival celebrates the amazing waterways and communities of Northern Michigan. The Festival, always the second weekend after Labor Day, includes a two-day paddle event through the Chain of Lakes Water Trail. This choose-your-own-adventure paddle provides the opportunity for you to paddle one or both days and decide how far to travel. There are exits strategically placed along the route so you may go anywhere from 7 miles to all 42 miles.

There is no better way to experience Grass River than by paddling its calm waters and enjoying its unique wildlife! On these morning guided tours, visitors explore Grass River by kayak and find out about GRNA’s conservation efforts, wetland plants, and wildlife. Adults and Teens Only. Limited to small groups, must pre-register. Call GRNA to register: at 231-492-8793, or email james@grassriver.org. This program meets at the Grass River Center and then walks to the dock to launch kayaks. Kayaks and paddles are provided and ready for you at the dock.
Art on Thursdays: Nature-Inspired Clay

SACRED HEART GOLF OUTING
Sacred Heart Catholic Parish in Elk Rapids is hosting a Golf Outing on Sunday, September 17, at Antrim Dells Golf Course, with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
The proceeds from the Golf Outing will go toward Sacred Heart's capital campaign, the goal of which is to build a new church that honors the parish's history while providing much-needed facility updates.
A Sacred Heart parishioner and one of the golf outing organizers Bob Chaphalkar and his family are deeply connected to Sacred Heart and have been attending for over 49 years. "My wife and I were married in this church and so were her parents. Our children and many cousins were baptized here. This project has been in the works for years. We want to see the vision become a reality."
Tickets are available now for $100 per person and cover a fun-filled day, including 18 holes of golf, a golf cart rental, and dinner. Golfers are encouraged to sign up by September 10. All are welcome! Golfers can register with a team of 4 or individually. Balance Bike Meet Ups - Thursday Mornings from 10:30 - 11:30 at the Chain Hun at Rotary Park. Preschool program for ages 2-5, story time with Ms. Kate, followed by balance bikes around the skills park from June 22 - August 24

Raven Hill is excited to host the newest Smithsonian Museum’s national traveling exhibit, “Spark! Places of Innovation” for six weeks - from August 26 to October 7. The Center will kick off the exhibition with a celebration open house on August 26th from noon – 4 pm.
Bring your family and friends to check out this unique traveling exhibit that focuses on innovation and inventions. You can also help by sharing the attached flyer with others and by posting something about our kickoff celebration on your Facebook page.
