The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

This morning as I was getting ready for school, I heard Sofia in the other room doing the same. The soft hum of the blow dryer, dresser drawers opening and closing and it struck me that this was it.

The last morning of us preparing for our day and going to the same place.

For the past 10 years, I’ve had a student at Lassen High School. It has made my career as a teacher even more fulfilling and enjoyable.

I loved every minute of commuting with my kids, storing duffle bags in classroom, seeing them and their friends at lunchtime, and observing their lives from afar.

I loved seeing Jacob’s redhead standing out among the others in the hallways, hearing Landon’s booming voice talking and laughing with friends, and watching Sofia bloom during the last four years.

It wasn’t just my own kids, but their friends too. Spencer, Makenna, Sage, Kenton, Dani, Will, and Gunnar left their impressions on my heart. As did Trenton, Jacob, and Garrett a few years later. Sofia brought a posse with her, who often ate lunch in my classroom: Renee, Sara, Jess, Hannah, Kahlen, Mea, Sabrina, Callie, and more.

I loved walking into the gym during an assembly and seeing their faces, smiling and cheering during roll call. Attending their games and activities. Celebrating their wins and success. Hearing good things from my colleagues. Even picking them up after a loss, failure, or other disappointment.

As a teacher, I’ve put my heart and soul into my classes and students for 26 years. I have the best job in the world. I wouldn’t trade it for anything and having my kids beside me made it even better. They were very good Grizzlies. I’m so proud of what they accomplished at LHS.

I’m not worried that I’ll lose my love for being a teacher next year. I may just be a little lost.

Thanks to my teacher friends for sharing the highs and lows and helping me navigate a school without Jacob, Landon, and Sofia. Especially Jessica Larson, who knows exactly when I need a hug. Happy Birthday to you my friend!

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to shelleybennett24@gmail.com and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”

Low Cost Rabies, Licensing Clinic and Pet Adoption Day Set for June 15th

The County of Lassen and the City of Susanville are inviting you to bring your pet to their annual low-cost Rabies and licensing clinic on Saturday, June 15th, at the Lassen County Animal Shelter on Johnstonville Road.

Thompson Peak Veterinary Clinic will be administering the rabies vaccinations which cost $12 for dogs from both the city and county.

City licenses are $4 for altered pets, $10 for unaltered and for County licenses the cost is $5 for altered pets and $15 for unaltered.

Why does your dog need to be licensed? Animal licensing assists the police department and county animal control personnel in identifying the owner of a stray or runaway animal. A dog that is licensed and wearing their identification tags can be returned to the owner quicker and avoid being taken to the animal shelter.

Make sure when you visit the event that your dog is on a leash and cats must be in pet carriers. If you are just coming for the license you must bring a current rabies vaccination certificate.

The Clinic will be held at the shelter, 472-000 Johnstonville Road, from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m.

For more information regarding the Low Cost Rabies and Licensing Clinic, please contact the Susanville Police Department at 1.530.257.5603, or the Lassen Animal Shelter at 1.530.257.9200.

Fire Burns behind Borghi’s Store on Richmond Rd.

Susanville Battles Fire Which Destroys Buildings And Is Menace to Town

Property Burning at City Limits: Large Loss Reported

Ice Company Plant, Store, Restaurant, Fuel Yard and Homes in Ashes

Control of Conflagration Hinged This Afternoon On One Structure

The fire was checked at three o’clock. Loss estimated at $100,000.

Lack of fire hydrants hampered the firefighters.

June 4, 1930

One of the most destructive fires to visit Susanville in several years was raging this afternoon just at the edge of the city limits and a large force of men including the firefighting equipment of the Lassen Lumber & Box Company was trying at two o’clock to check the flames.

Because the fire was outside the city limits, the Susanville fire department did not respond to the alarm.

At two o’clock, the Union Ice company’s plant, the Borghi grocery store, the China restaurant, the lumber yard owned by the late Paul Quigley, the Quigley apartment house with all its contents, the Red River Lumber Company’s sub-station and two dwelling houses, had been destroyed.

The office equipment of Quigley’s lumber company was saved but all the remaining contents of the apartment house in which the office was located was burned.

At two o’clock the fire was confined to a two-story building and if that is saved then it would be expected the fire would be checked on its advance towards the town of Susanville. All the property destroyed is on the Richmond road south of Susanville.

The fire started in a small shed in the rear of the Borghi store. No water was available to fight it and it spread rapidly.

The two houses burned included the Staup residence and the Dr. Cooley residence.
