Employee Profile: Kevin Walsh

A picture of a white man, Kevin Walsh, in a black t-shirt at UNLV.

Kevin Walsh, the Surplus Center manager, has found a home at UNLV among his team and unit. A public storefront located a few blocks east of the Maryland campus, the Surplus Center relies on public donations and inventory from Property Control to provide furniture, equipment, clothes, and other miscellaneous goods to sell at affordable prices. Kevin is determined to keep it that way! “Students, as well as other members of the community, come in to take advantage of our affordable desktops and laptops,” Kevin said. The center’s selection of affordable items and the reliability of Kevin and his staff are part of what makes the Surplus Center such an important piece of the greater UNLV community.

Kevin researches the prices for each product the center receives, enabling him to price items accordingly and utilize an online auction system to sell higher-end products or items too large to place in the storefront. His favorite part of managing the storefront, however, is helping customers understand the center's products. “I love it when I have someone who doesn’t know much about computers and operating systems. I take my time and explain to them each detail to make sure the computer will be the right fit for their needs,” says Kevin.

Kevin was born and raised in Chicago, IL, and has lived in Las Vegas for nearly 10 years. When he isn’t assisting customers at the Surplus Center, he enjoys riding his mountain bike around the Las Vegas Valley. He also bikes to work each day and hasn’t driven a car in months. Along with being an avid cycle enthusiast, Kevin is a 2nd-degree brown belt in Taekwondo.

UNLV is creating a campus-wide climate action plan, nicknamed the Rebel CAP. Once complete, the Rebel CAP will provide the roadmap for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future for UNLV.

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to a hybrid Rebel CAP kick-off event. Campus leadership, the Rebel CAP core team, and representatives from Brailsford & Dunlavey, the consulting agency involved in the initiative, will provide an overview of the Rebel CAP. Participants will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and perspectives during interactive breakout sessions. Refreshments will be served.

July Employee Appreciation Recipients

Gilda Holliday, a Black woman, at UNLV in a black collared shirt

Gilda Holliday, Facilities Management, Warehouse

Gilda was nominated for her professionalism with suppliers and colleagues. When she receives orders, she exhausts all means to find the best prices and ensure the products arrive on schedule.

Thanks to her diligence, technicians receive the parts and tools they need on time to keep projects running smoothly. Thank you, Gilda, for all you do!

Robert Deaver, a white man, in a light blue collared shrit at UNLV

Robert Deaver, Risk Management & Safety

Robert was nominated for leading a team through the development of a new in-house program to review workers' compensation history. The data is used to find trends in work-related injuries and identify and assign safety training that could help to reduce those injuries.

Before the creation of this new program, a third-party administrator was used to retrieve the data and staff sifted through it using an Excel sheet, a costly and time-intensive process.

Thanks to the new in-house program, RMS can now identify these safety training opportunities more efficiently and reduce injuries across campus. Thank you, Robert, for all you do!

Risk Management & Safety Monthly Trainings

The words safety first in red, green, yellow, and orange colors held by ambigous people figures

From working with departments to strategize logistics for events to partnering with community organizations to expand UNLV’s representation within the Las Vegas community, RMS is dedicated to refining campus safety initiatives through protocols and training.

Each month, RMS offers in-person training opportunities on various safety topics. Their calendar is updated regularly with courses that are open to the UNLV community, allowing participants to earn a variety of certifications and equipping attendees with life-saving skills.

Risk Management & Safety Field Safety Fall Kick-off Event

Yellow, diamond, sign that says safety first

Risk Management & Safety (RMS) invites you to attend a special field safety fall kick-off event happening on Sept.12. This event starts at 10 a.m. in the Rogers Literature and Law Building (RLL), room 101, and will feature presentations from UNLV faculty and staff who will share their field research experiences.

Sponsored by the UNLV Field Safety Committee and RMS, this engaging and informative event is ideal for members of the campus community who are interested in field research and education.

Read the UNLV Today announcement to learn more about this field safety event and to register.

Workers’ Compensation Instructions

Risk Management & Safety would like to remind you about your rights and responsibilities when injured at work. Workers’ compensation is a benefit afforded to all employees and documented volunteers. Covered by the Nevada System of Higher Education’s self-insured program, it covers job-related illnesses or injuries as a result of performing work duties.

The process to file a worker’s compensation claim includes step-by-step instructions that an injured employee should follow to ensure proper filing and timely processing.

To learn more about the process or to file a claim, visit the workers' compensation claim filing instructions and forms webpage or contact UNLV Risk Management & Safety - Insurance & Claims at 702-895-4226.

Spotlight on Service

In October 2022, we distributed our annual Business Affairs customer service survey. Many of our campus colleagues replied to the survey with notes of praise for our hard-working teams. See below for some highlights.

General accounting provides a wealth of knowledge and is always willing to assist with our questions and concerns.”

“Great staff (Financial Planning, Budget, & Analysis) and always ready to assist and answer questions. They also ask for feedback on Anaplan and other processes so that they can be improved.”

Upgrading Your Digital Literacy

Google is adding the option to lock Drive files by right-clicking the file inside of your Drive folder. Locking a file ensures that reviewers can’t change a file. Edits, comments, and suggestions can't be added to locked documents. This update simplifies and streamlines the process of restricting files in Drive and began rolling out to all customers on Sept. 5.
