Birchwood Camp

Birchwood Camp Board of Directors positions open

Birchwood Camp is owned by the Alaska United Methodist Conference and operated by an independent Board of Directors. The Board is a mix of pastors, lay people and community supporters. Board members are the visionaries, setting the direction for Birchwood today, tomorrow and into the future.

We are looking for persons with experience/interest in construction/project management, accounting/book keeping/finance and personnel/human resources. The most important experience/interest is a love of camping and outdoor ministries.

Board terms are 3 years in length. If you have served in the past and have been off the board for at least one (1) year, you are eligible to be on the Board again. You do not need to live in Anchorage to be a Board member. Terms begin in January 2024.

The Board meets 4 times a year and has been meeting by Zoom to include Board members from across the state.

To learn more or express your interest, contact Sandra Woods (Board President) surywoods@yahoo.com.

Emergency Response Team Training (ERT)

When disasters strike, United Methodists respond in many different ways. Our earliest responders are ERTs, who go in to help clean, sort, and prep homes for long term repairs or replacements. If you think you might be interested in knowing more, or receiving this training, please speak with Dan Wilcox, Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, at 907.414.7078, or AlaskaCDRC@pnwumc.org

The training will be Nov. 4th from 9:00am-3:00pm, at Anchor Park UMC (2300 Oak Drive) in Anchorage. ERTs are required to be 18 years old and physically able to do the work.

Regionalization is already (partly) here

The word “regionalization” has been used more frequently in recent months as legislation to put The United Methodist Church’s different geographic regions on equal footing heads to General Conference. In a new series, Ask The UMC explores the ways that regionalization already exists for central conferences, as well as the implications of enabling regionalization worldwide, including for United Methodists in the United States.

Weaving harmful bags into helpful mats

At Hope United Methodist Church, two members started an initiative to weave plastic bags into sleeping mats for people who are homeless. Values Statement
We acknowledge that the Methodist Church is complicit with and rooted in the colonization of Alaska and recognize that we live in that ongoing legacy. We lament the harm and trauma that our faith community causes. John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Movement, summarized God’s directives with three Rules: do no harm, do good, and attend to the ordinances of God. We also celebrate the grace, the love, and the good that our church does that calls us to re-imagine mission through intentional discipleship with one another.
We will live into the transition to a Mission District committed to:
Alaska Conference Values
  1. The love of God, neighbor, and self, demonstrated by the deliberate embracing and valuing of differences, the leveling of imbalances between people and systems, and the intentional dismantling of inequities in whatever forms they present themselves.
  2. Healing, grace-filled mission with communities and churches that prioritizes local experiences and shares resources across time and distance through equitable relationships.
  3. Living into connectionalism by belonging to and trusting in one another to nurture relationships that celebrate the gifts each of our communities bring, allowing us to move forward in a decolonized way.
