“This church is the heartbeat of the community.” In 2019, Category 5 Hurricane Dorian became one of the most devastating storms in the Bahamas. Although New Emmanuel Baptist Church in Maclean’s Town, East Grand Bahamas, withheld the 100mph storm, 50% of the walls were displaced, the roof was gone and the church was filled with 15 feet of water.
Today, New Emmanuel Baptist Church continues to meet on church grounds while renovations happen. In addition to the renovations, a Category 5 hurricane shelter is on the church’s property. This shelter will be a safe location for those wishing to remain in the community during storms. When there are no storms, this shelter will be a community center for after-school care and a sewing ministry.
Rev. Edwin Pinder and his wife Alma lost their home due to Hurricane Dorian but continue to lead New Emmanuel Baptist Church with perseverance and kindness. They welcome all to their services, even in an exposed church building. Their main concern is finding sponsors to help with the last half of church renovations and furniture to fill the church.
Rev. Edwin Pinder notes that they are “trusting that God will make a way” as they continue to be present for all experiencing loss and devastation in their community.
