Dear Farm Friends,

Continuing our series of interviews with Mountain Bounty Farmers, we’ve got Becky Ahmadi, 46, our incredible CSA manager.

What brought you to Mountain Bounty?

I started at Mountain Bounty eight years ago. I was a stay at home mom, and when my kids started school I had a little bit of free time so I decided to go with a friend to volunteer and help with the harvest one morning a week. I got folded into the crew pretty quickly and the next year when I asked the crew leader to give me a job recommendation, she said OK, but then also offered me a job.

You seem to have a special way with people, what’s your secret?

I’m curious about all the different personality types that come into farming. I enjoy working with all different kinds of people, many of whom are much younger than me. I view working on the farm as a form of self-care. Talking to everyone, getting my hands in the soil, the hard physical work, harvesting the gorgeous food. It’s good for my soul.

Tell me about your current role at the farm?

I’ve been the CSA manager for over a year now. When the opportunity came along, after being here for years, I liked the idea of a role where I could help guide the direction of the farm. I think it’s great that there’s this cooperative management model here. I’d like to see that continue.

I’m responsible for all of our member management, which is everything from the basics of helping people set up their subscriptions to helping them when they have problems, handling all of our communications, and delivery logistics – which can be...complicated, at best. I’ve found that so many issues can be solved as long as there’s communication. In my role I hear a lot of positive feedback, and I like to share that with the rest of the crew.

Looking forward, I’ve been starting to apply for some grants for the farm. I’d like to find ways for us to diversify. I’m working on one grant that will help us get more food into the local school system. I’m also interested in helping us expand into more under-served communities and food deserts. I’m always trying to find ways to get the word out and help people know more about us.

A note about box returns!

There are a few things we ask our members to do so we can continue to reuse the boxes efficiently:

  1. Remove the fruit from your boxes immediately so the fruit does not stain the box (plus it keeps longer outside of the plastic shell).
  2. Store your Fruit Share box inside until you return it
  3. If your box is torn or stained, please do not return it and instead place it in your recycling bin. Both farms are using crew time to manage the box return program, so we'd love to only deal with boxes that can truly be reused.

Thanks for your support!
